I am in the habit of changing my cameras, between bridge and dslr's, I have a Canon 60d with 17-70 Sigma and Tamron 70-300, both excellent lenses, in my opinion better than equivalent Canon lenses, recently I thought I would buy a Fuji hs50, mainly because of reviews etc, I mistakenly thought it would replace my 60D, oh boy, big mistake, the Fuji is an excellent camera, but today I took photos of my 4 year old granddaughter, using both cameras in the same situations, the results when downloaded to my pc are a revelation, the Fuji doesn't come near the Canon for IQ, not only for sharpness but for noise, tonal range etc, so pleased I kept my Canon, I will get money back on Fuji, but the moral of my story is really aimed at all the Canon xs50 owners out there, don't kid yourselves about your cameras, even a starter dslr like Canon 1100d will outperform any bridge camera, so if you are serious about photography buy a DSLR !!!

This would be my solution if I DID NOT want to crop.

I use Photoshop, so here goes for Photo #2 . . .

1. Go to "Canvas Size" and add a narrow white border to all
sides of the original.

2. Add a black border to the top and bottom. You
decide how much border you need.

3. Now go to "Canvas Size" again and multiply the height by
1.37. Use the result as the canvas width. This will produce
a canvas size in the correct proportion for a 14 x 10.25
photo.

For Photo #1, use 1.47 in step #3.

I hope this helps.

[quote=JR1]Just a chat no photo, why are some photographers MORONS

As I get press privilege at the sports events I shoot, especially referring to this weekends powerboats, I have noticed that some photographers, thankfully very few though, really are pigs.

Whilst shooting the presentations, me, the official P1 photographer and another who had permission to be there, an old, yes old man, sorry, about 75, with a Pentax and 55-300 lens came and joined in, in fact actually "pushed" in.

When I (bloody annoyed) told him he should not be here, he wanted to know why we were here and sod us.

I explained, bluntly and told him "stay out of my way".

He eventually went, most grumpy.

What they don't get is that if all the audience with mobiles, cameras etc joined in it would be chaos.

Before I was lucky, through polite asking in writing, I was in the crowd, I would never think of pushing in at a big event.

There were just two more but they were kneeling down, yes, with us, but not once did they get in the way.

You, sir (if you ARE a "sir", sound like YOU are the rude one,
AND a pure ass. You should have learned to respect your elders before someone was so kind to give you your first camera.

Why didn't you just explain the situation to the GENTLEMAN? Or would that have caused you to miss one of your precious photos? Were you angry because his camera was better than yours, or maybe because he had a better lens?

One day, YOU will be the 75-year-old man, and when you get into the same situation, maybe the grandson of the old GENTLEMAN will order you out of the way and BLOODY kick your ass.

You would have a mighty rough life in the U.S.A. Especially in Tennessee.

I seem to see a small part of the flower that IS in sharp focus.
Could it be a depth-of-field problem?

Have you tried shooting at f/16 or smaller?

How close were you to the flower?

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions. I already have a flash bracket that I used with my 35mm camera. I see that I should now go ahead and buy an external flash since the ones I have will not work with the Canon T3i.

Artificial lighting doesn't seem to adversly affect my subjects, not even the bursts to prevent red-eye. However, those bursts will cause the animal to look toward the camera before the main flash fires. Sometimes I don't want that.

My "wildlife" is mostly foxes and 'coons that come to the edge of my back yard. I usually photograph from a distance of ten feet or less. They treat my flashlight like it's not even there, which is good, but they won't look directly at it long enough to prevent red-eye.

I should have posted an example of my problen. I'll do that now.

By the way, TucsonCoyote, Sammy's eyes are beautiful.

If you are planning to sell a photo of an animal that your
flash has given the red (blue, white, yellow) eye,
what do you do with it? Do you correct the eyes,
or do you leave them alone?

All photographers know that this is a common
"problem", but will the potential buyers realize this?

If you decide to "fix" the eyes, how do you do it?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I am new to this forum and would like suggestions from those who wear glasses. I manage to smudge my glasses routinely when using my T2i.

I'll try smudging MY glasses if it will get me pictures like that one!

If you think your bank account is weak NOW,
just wait until you get back from New York!

"In hiding" sounds like a much nicer place than New York.

What am I saying? I've never been there.
