Thank you, folks! This have been a great conversation to read this evening. The great American sense of humor is still alive and well.

Has anyone else tried one of these? If so, what's your appraisal of it?

I've enjoyed shooting small stuff, but I haven't had an actual macro lens for any of my exchangeable lens cameras. I currently use a Canon EOS R and a 760D (AKA Rebel T6s). Following advice here once I added a full frame camera to my bag, I've weeded out EF-S lenses to end up with lenses usable on both cameras, and most are Canon L or Tamron SP category. (My 50mm is not.) However, I just ran across a pristine Promaster Spectrum 7 AF 100mm f/3.5 MC Macro for $35 locally, and after reading reviews, I just couldn't resist picking it up to feed my growing interest in macro photography - even though I'll only use it on the 760D. But that lens is a topic for another post... maybe.

While online "studying" what's available at reasonable cost that I could pair with the R, I naturally looked at a variety of extension tube solutions. I even watched a couple of videos about adapters to reverse lenses in one's kit as a way to use them for macro functions. And, of course, I looked at reviews of lots of the possible choices in authentic macro lenses that could be adapted to the R with the EF-to-R adapter rings, of which I have 3 now - one on each of the EF lenses I commonly use on the camera.

While doing this "study," I came across the Fotodiox tube mentioned in the title here, and was surprised to see they were making one for the RF mount series of Canon mirrorless cameras. I found these things for $80 at a variety of places, but when I checked the manufacturer's website I discovered they were offering a discount of $16.75 ($63.20) with free shipping. Even though I was actively browsing the web for a bargain on a nice macro lens with AF and IS (despite the experts who say ya must always use a tripod and always manual focus for macro) but under $400, I went ahead and blew the money on this adapter. It arrived this afternoon.

I've only had time to play with this adapter a little bit, and I've used my only RF lens and my best EF lens with a Canon EF-to-R adapter ring. This is a solid little piece of hardware, and it fits snugly with absolutely no movement once mated with body and/or lens. Just experimenting so far. While I barely know what I'm doing, I've yet to put it on a tripod to try for perfection, so I judge IS to be working. I've relied both on AF and MF. It's easier to pick the exact point which I want most perfectly focused if I use MF, but either works.

What do you think of the outcome so far? The 4th photo is a cell phone shot of the subject of the last 2 photos. The others where shot with one lens or the other +the Fotodiox adapter ring.

Bit of a follow-up story:
By Christmas I found a universally well reviewed 105mm macro lens with AF and IS (Sigma) MPB (rated excellent cond.) under $400 and the Fotodiox order had not yet arrived. I was pretty certain the Sigma would sell swiftly, and I wasn't at all certain how well this adapter would actually perform for real macro work. I asked my wife what she thought, and she actually said "order it." Ha. (This stuff keeps me out of her hair.) Done. Now I wonder if I'll be any better off with my macro play.

At least I was out there long enough to get some nice shots of the half moon and a sunset with a rare added feature. It was a pretty, though very chilly, evening here in northern Colorado. The first shot is from a little Canon Powershot I had along as a just-in-case. The second was shot with a Canon T6s & Canon 70-200 w/1.4 ext; f/5.6, 1/125, ISO 200, 98mm.

My neighborhood has quite a number of trees and I didn't know if the conjunction would be really visible. As a result I was caught completely flatfooted and unprepared to photograph it when I saw that it was low enough to the horizon to be below most of the canope. Since I would be shooting from the middle of the street and didn't know how much time I had to set up I grabbed the camera and a monopod. Camera Nikon 7100, lens Nikon 200-500 at 500mm, f 5.6, 1/100 sec., ISO 2500. What might seem an under exposure allowed the rings of Saturn to appear.

Exceptional shot! I never got close to this kind of photo. This was with EOS R and Tamron 150-600 G2. f/36, 1/13, ISO 5000, 600mm. Got too much going, I think, and really fumbled the aperture.

Shoot RAW and fix in post. I used my D810 with Tamron 150-600 mm G2 set at 600 mm. F/6.3, 1/10 second, ISO 3200. Swap ISO and shutter speed if you like to follow the rule of 500, which I don't. Use a tripod. Turn OFF whatever vibration reduction your lens has. Retract mirror. Close shutter on viewfinder. Use LIVE VIEW to focus your lens (zoom in of course). Where I am located, the four largest moons of Jupiter are very evident. The rings of Saturn were positioned to make Saturn look elongated.

Good luck and have fun!

Hi Scruples,
Thanks for your prompt response and apologies for my tardy reply. Unfortunately, closer examination revealed small pieces of glass as well as the first noticed problem behind first element. So, although I do not remember any drop or rough treatment of any kind, I clearly shattered some lens inside. Luckily, I had purchased accident warranty so we will see how it all works out. With luck we will be capturing images again soon. Good luck returning your 18-270 and I am sorry it does not meet your needs. All the Best, TullyBoy

This may turn out to be pretty painless after all! Well, other than having to await return of the lens. It might be a perfect opportunity to look around for a low-priced companion lens that rounds out your shooting capabilities and will give you something to use in the meantime. Honestly, my experience with third party (mostly Tamron) and used has been very happy as I've ramped up my photo fascination since retirement. My best bargain yet arrived yesterday. I've been getting interested in macro photography and wanted to get a lens specific to that purpose just to explore that a bit more. I picked this up for $45 including shipping!

Canon uses two types of connectors for remotes. A minijack on older cameras, such as the T3i I once had, and then a 3-pin jack starting with, I think, the 6D. When I bought a 6D I had to get a different cord for my wireless remote. No adapter for my Canon wired remote so I just bought a new 3-pin. They're cheap. Then I ended up giving away my minijack wired remote. Figured I wouldn't need it again since it was the old style that wouldn't fit my current cameras. Bought an R and guess what! Canon went back to the minijack on the R series! Probably because its smaller size is a better fit for the smaller bodies. Anyway, for many wireless remotes you can simply buy the correct cord as I did, but, I don't know of any adapters for wired remotes.
As far as your Polaroid, as mentioned previously, check for manual switches. Your user manual should tell you. Also check and see if you can change frequencies with a button push. That is also a common method of making connection.

Interesting. I use a wired Canon RS-60E3 with my T6s (760D), and it's pure simplicity. I use the wireless BR-E1 with my EOS-R, which certainly works better if I want to be in the photo too, but I use it so seldom that it takes me forever to remember how to set up the camera for communication each time. Being dense is difficult.

Actually Rob, Although her outfit seems to stand out, this had nothing to do with the photograph. I was working and not near my vehicle when I noticed her and did not catch on to the fact that she was on roller blades. What I noticed was that she was really moving fast! She was headed into the cul de sac I was in and I had to hurry if I was going to get a shot. She would also take an occasional sip of her drink. Her moves were graceful meaning that she had a lot of experience with roller blades. In other words, you had to be there. My secondary thoughts were; I wonder how long those wheels would last since the asphalt has a very rough texture? I guess I am just getting old.

This really is a great shot... for more reasons than what is apparently #1 for most viewers. Definitely, we can tell her work-out program is effective. But with the photographer's comments here I can picture myself caught up in the effort to capitalize on a perfect "story" picture. I love it from all aspects... uh, really, no pun intended.
