Other than for professional photographers (those who earn their living through photography) how many lenses are really needed? On full frame camera is anything more than a 35mm or 50mm and a specialty lens, ie a telephoto, or macro, or something else depending on the focus of interest really needed? I know that lens manufacturers want us to think we do, but do we really?

Four.

Okay, maybe five.

Oh, hell, one of each. For each camera.

Realistically, as a photography neophyte who has only become serious about the craft in the last 6 months, you're led to believe that crop cameras suck, if you don't have full frame you're not taking this seriously and will always have crappy pictures, if you don't buy ff lenses exclusively, you're not taking this seriously and will always have crappy pictures... Wow, just realized I'm on a rant. Sorry about that.

Truthfully, in my opinion, if you have a good walk-around, say 18-70mm, 18-140mm, or 18-200mm, a mid-range tele @ 70-300, a prime lens, 35mm for crop cameras, 50mm for ff, and possibly a long lens, something from 400mm to 600mm for reaching out there, is all any newbie needs for the first couple of years learning how to make good photographs, without breaking the bank. Because GAS can get you in a lot of trouble.

" That's right, folks, buy our newest Nicanolta 5 million D mk VII and you too can take the greatest photographs in the history of man!!"

( But only if you learn how to use it, ya moron.)

The problem is, most people think ALL cameras are point and shoot. And then wonder why all their pictures look like crap.

I do hope you keep us up to date on travel plans, perhaps to possibly do quick meet and greets with some of your fellow Hogs that live near your destinations?

If I were to hazard a guess, I would say it was probably the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City. It covers over a city block, including what is basically a small turn of the century frontier town, with a separate warehouse containing blacksmithing and farming equipment and machinery. Be prepared to devote at least a couple of hours to exploring all the buildings. (And that's all I'm going to say about that, don't want to ruin it for you.)

So, living in Oklahoma for the last 2 years, within an hour of Route 66, came across these in a roadside souvenir shop. If we had had these before we went to California last February for my dad's funeral, our trip back would have been MUCH different. And we still travelled Route 66 as much as we could. Web addresses are included on the pages I photo'd.

And don't discount the amazing scenery and photo opps on OK, there's some great stuff here. Safe travels to you.

So, still learning the system. And, these are what they are, cell phone pics. I know they can be better, which I why I bought real cameras. And joined this forum.

Proof that the best camera is the one you have with you. Motorola cell phone. Pretty much exactly a year ago. This trip was a stopover on the way home from my dad's funeral in California. It also convinced me I needed real equipment.

So, to get this thread back on track, these photos, and many others, where taken with my Motorola cell phone, Feb. of last year. Good pics, I think. BUT, I felt I could do so much better, and have more options. I now own several Nikon DSLR's, am learning everything I can about how to use them, correctly, AND teaching my 10 and 12 year old sons how, as well. Do I still use the cell phone for pics? Sure, but not nearly as often as we use our DSLR'S. REAL cameras are here to stay.
