A photog friend told me about a new photo file format called JPEG XL, which claims to have smaller files and backward compatibility with the current JPEG standard.

Has anyone heard anything about this?

This begs the question, will be able to upgrade my Canon Rebel T6 to save in this format?

Only if Canon releases a new firmware to allow that (I really doubt they will).

Sad to read about your shoulder injury, looks like an awesome lens you have to part with.
Sad also that I don't live in the USA to buy it (although probably I wouldn't be able to afford it).

Hope your shoulder "behaves" :)

From the looks of this forum the older users are sticking with their old D850 and D500 and not migrating even to mirrorless.
Younger folks seem to know the Sony name from game consoles so there is the name recognition that traditional cameras lack with young people.

Right, and in addition to that, the majority of young youtubers/reviewers have a tendency for Sony, as they have video as a big part of their work.
Pretty tough to capture that market without appropriate marketing.

I do find it surprising that the target audience for the z-fc is believed to be young women, and NOT older men. We older men used to own film cameras that were very much like this camera. I get the appeal. I also get that young folks are on a retro kick in other areas. The resurgence of turntables and vinyl LPs are very much a young folks thing, for instance. But still...I guess the eventual sales numbers will tell the story. Young women aren't buying a lot of cameras now, other than the ones in their cell phones. I predict lukewarm sales.

On the other hand I doubt that older men are buying lots of entry-level cameras. Either they already have what they want/need, or are aiming to high-end FF.
And I guess the bet is they understand that the young women would be new customers, while old men in the best case would buy a body, but already have enough glass.

As you said, sales will tell the story.
My impression was that Z5 was going to do much better than it did.

The aperture ring on the old AI lenses can't avoid the PSAM. So when they introduced the new Z lenses it's an opportunity to have them like Fuji did.

Don't S series Z lenses have a ring that can be customized to manage aperture?

This thread is strange. Is there an official update/upgrade for Windows 11 out?

What with the pandemic and all the chaos, I forgot to make my usual New Years' resolutions. Not that I keep all of them. Today I thought I would catch up.

Why today. Well, yesterday my wife and I got our second Covid vaccine shot. I'm kinda under the weather and she really feels poorly, so we both played hooky and stayed home from work. I was poking around online and she is listening to some calm "easy listening" music. No heavy classics, rock 'n' roll, marshall music or acid rock allowed today so, this song came over the stereo:

"Among My Souvenirs"

The first line is the lyrics were "There's nothing left for me..." just as I was reading the forum and participating in a SOOTC vs. Post-Processing usual thing. I became inspired by the music to make some belated resolutions pertaining to the forum. I am gonna try to avoid chiming in on the following kinda threads in the interest of avoiding headaches:

SOOTC vs. PP. Filter vs. Never Filters, Anti-Flash usage, I was asked to shoot a wedding- what lens? etc, DSLR vs Mirrorless that go over 9 responses, Perfectly fine threads that turn into semantics wars and /or becomes a litany of obscure philosophies and, threads containing name-calling, personal attacks and ugly arguments and obvious attempts at trolling.

Then, I pondered over my aforementioned list and realized, WHAT'S LEFT? Thus the song!

I was always a Conne Francis fan- she sang in multiple languages. This song includes the word PHOTOGRAPHS!

Sorry folks- I promise to go back to work in the morning. Idle hands do the devil's work!

What with the pandemic and all the chaos, I forgot... (show quote)

It looks like a good list of threads to avoid.
I really really really hope you continue chiming in each time you can/want. Your replies not only come from a incredible experienced photographer, but you also take the time to elaborate detailed answers to help the rest of us.

As said in another message, quite normal to feel down after a dose (especially second one). Hope you are back at 100% soon :)

I only went there once, and most of my recommendations are all listed above.

I would add one that nobody mentioned so far, if open, try to get to Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) before sunset. Very nice view with the added bonus of having Empire State in your frame :)

You are right about it being to the Task Manager. Wrong about keeping programs from running, and if by chance it does, you can always go back and put a check on it. Apps are not programs, Juan.

The difference between apps and programs was created only by usage of the words, generally using "apps" (abbreviation of "applications") to those in mobile devices, but they are indeed the same. They are programs/applications that run on an operating system.

I didn't say if would prevent from running, but if the background application/program in charge of file syncing or real-time virus scanning, etc. is not executed at start-up..........it won't run (and do its job) until the user explicitly executes the program/application.

Yes, it can be reverted by checking the option again. But your suggestion never mentioned to be careful on what was left unchecked, and could cause trouble to the user in the mid term.

Jerry, are you familiar with MSCONFIG, if not go to run and type in MSCONFIG, it lists all the programs running in the background. In MSCONFIG go to the startup tab, click on that and uncheck everything, it will not hurt anything and all your programs will run normally, they will just
not be running in the background and a bonus is that it will speedup your computer a little bit, try it you will like it.

A couple of comments over this suggestion:
1) startup has been moved to task manager, I think with Windows 10
2) doing that can prevent important applications to not run in the background, like file sync apps. The user would surely regret that.

And I understand that once it auto detects DX and goes into crop mode, you should have no vignette, just as if you were using it on a DX.

The vignetting should happen only if you use the FX camera in FX mode with the DX lens.

I have a D7200 and this lens, I'm very happy with it, but no FX camera to try it for you.

I am sorry, I posted my question wrong.
I am experimenting with long exposure and the night sky. I am taking multiple pictures using a tripod and a MC-DC2 remote cord. Most exposures are around 15 to 30 seconds. The problem is with changing lenses or lens settings 15 minutes goes by real quick. Then I need to reset the long exposure setting on the camera. I assume this 15 minutes in long exposure keeps the functions of the camera from over heating and causing problems with the circuitry? Maybe I just need to stick with one lens and one aperture setting at a time.
I am sorry, I posted my question wrong. br I am ex... (show quote)

If I understand correctly (I'm not sure I do), you are talking about the long exposure noise reduction feature. That's not for preventing heating of the sensor.
What it does is takes a second shot, of the same length (shutter speed) with the shutter closed, and uses that shot to remove heating noise from the original capture.

When I do astro I disable this feature as it takes double the time to expose. If I want to have a dark frame, I take shots with the lens cap on, and use them to remove noise off camera.

Hope this helps/answers your question. If not, please further explain and I'll try to answer

Yes, and probably is fixed for any length stay, making it very expensive for a short one.
