I'm a believer in what Steve Perry recommends, and bought one of the Wimberly MonoGimbals to use for birding. In use, the small amount of off-center displacement is a non-factor for me, as one instinctively adjusts to the conditions at hand.
The use of one has allowed me to lower my shutter speeds and thus lower the ISO, for easier post production and higher quality prints.
Here's one from yesterday, uncropped and with minimal manipulation in post. I was able to get it at 1/250th at 560mm (100-400 at max with a 1.4X TC) and Auto ISO of 100.
