I've recently purchased a gaming computer for photo editing. It has a 1 tb ssd for the operating system. My preference is to use an external drive for my data storage and not fill up my internal ssd. I see that one can purchase an 8 tb ssd on ebay new for under $50, or go name brand for half the capacity and $400. Should I get another external hard drive (mechanical) or external ssd? Does brand name matter? Thx.

There have been many posts in other forums on scams selling fake ssd's on ebay. Just Google Scam SSD and ebay and you will find many links to click on. If it is too good to be true, it is. Go with Samsung, Crucial, Western Digital.

You can up that to 32gb Ram. The best PC's are Dell IMHO . And yes I have used both top Mac's and PC's in decades as a pro.

Cheers and best to you.

If you don't want to pay the price for the XPS, which is undoubtedly an excellent laptop (except for lack of ports), I have been using a Dell G15 that I got in the Spring. They make a 17 inch version. It is a "gaming computer" with a discrete NVIDIA graphic processor, 16 GB Ram and a 1 T SSB. It ably runs both the latest versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. It is heavier than the XPS, but has more ports. I use it with an external monitor.

Yeah, I've been diving since 1975 and have NEVER worn a wetsuit! We made a couple dives on the Great Barrier Reef a couple years ago. Not really dives, tourist dives off a tourist boat. We wore dive skins there and it was not bad, but anything heavier than that, I'm not interested!

Obviously, you limit your diving to tropical waters. At my age (76), I tend to wear a wetsuit more often than not, although I have now given up scuba diving.

Now that you're a paid subscriber, use the available technical support chat support from Adobe.

Thank you for the excellent suggestion. The Adobe support person I worked with through "Chat" was excellent. He did a remote takeover of my computer. I am not sure what he did differently than I did, but we were able to do a borderless print.

This Spring I bought a new laptop (Dell) and upgraded from Lightroom 6 to Lightroom Classic. Previously, with the same printer (Canon multifunction TR8620) and my old laptop, I was able to print borderless prints from Lightroom 6 without problems. Yesterday, I tried making some prints of my Grandchildren using Lightroom Classic and the same printer. I was unable to make a borderless print in Lightroom. I was using 8 1/2 x 11 Canon photo paper. I had checked the "Zoom to fit" in Lightroom, on "page setup," which takes you to the menu for the Canon printer, I chose borderless print and selected maximum "extension." I was unable to set the margins in Lightroom at zero. It printed as shown on the screen, which produced a narrow white border around the print. I was able to print borderless by right clicking on the photo in Lightroom and selecting "edit in" and "open as a smart object in Photoshop." This opened the picture in Photoshop and I was able to print borderless with no problem in Photoshop. While this is a workaround, it seems unnecessary. What am I doing wrong in Lightroom?

Do any of you use the CCleaner subscription? I just ran the free version - with no problems revealed - and it showed how I could put thirty-five other programs to sleep and ease the workload on the computer. It would cost me $35 annually to do that, though.

It also found 102 Registry issues that it could correct - without paying, I think. I hesitate to mess with the registry, though. From what I've seen online, it's not worth the trouble.

Opinions?

I used to run CCleaner on my computers years ago. However, I have read multiple articles from "experts" that say the registry does not need to be "cleaned" and to take the approach of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I stopped using registry cleaners and have not had any problems as a result.

Just got into the puddle myself. The lastest auto update bricked my best laptop (which was more than 8 years old ) and the factory reset brought it back to window 8. Lost some files and kicked a few bins but accepted the result just the same. My 3 year old laptop did update well but became a crawler. The trusty tower which i got way back in 2007 is running on its last lifecycle, having gone to 3 repairs.

I had no choice but to bite the times. Got myself a Dell G15 running on Windows 11 just a few days back. I'm now set for another 8-10 years hopefully.

I got a G15 about 3 months ago. to replace a 9 year old Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 It took me about 2 months to get it running smoothly. Literally, the first day I started setting it up, I got repeated BSOD's. I am quite computer literate, but fortunately I decided to spring for Dell's premium support service. First time I have done that over many computer purchases. Fortunately, I found their premium support to be excellent. No waiting on the phone. You send them an email or text, and within 30 minutes someone who knows what they are doing calls you back. After repeated attempts to cure the problem with my first G-15, Dell expedited a replacement. And the second one did the same thing!!!--repeated BSOD's. By that point, I was elevated to a senior support person. He had me delete everything on the SSD and download a clean copy of Windows 11. That solved the problem, but, of course, I had to download and reinstall all my programs; a time-consuming process.
Hopefully, your experience is much better than mine. It is a nice machine once I got rid of the gremlins (may have partially been a result of the "crap ware" that Dell includes). It is very smooth and handles Lightroom a lot faster than my old computer.

CHD means: whatever processor is contains (Intel, AMD, etc), the hard drive - 1TB or larger, memory: 16GB or larger

You can use USB-connected drives to create more storage over 1TB. The memory is for running your editing software. The chip / processor runs on generations and 'speed' as measured in GHz. They also can subdivide and distribute the processing, doing 2 things equally fast at once, or 4 or 8 / 16 / etc.

Take the idea mentioned at Walmart and go online, or drive over, and check the specs. Allow for the cost of purchasing software too. The OS should come installed, but what else, if anything. Do you need MS office? You can get by with free Google Docs. You'll need a virus protection. Is this pre-installed and what is the annual subscription cost? Can you download your current digital editor and re-install on the new equipment?

EDIT: looking online at the Walmart site, it seem your Windows-based options are 8GB with drives maybe 500GB. These would be fine, just undersized for running the top-notch software. If not subscribing to the Adobe software, probably not an issue.

If saving money is important, the general thinking of most experts I read is that Windows built in anti-virus, Windows Defender is adequate. There are also a number of free antivirus programs that are well considered.

I compared the two downloaded pictures two ways - zoomed, but at the same image size, and zoomed to the same percentage. The kite is significantly sharper both ways in all three viewers I used. Were I to choose just on that basis, I would choose that lens. The size, weight and probably cost comparisons make the choice easy, though I probably would not use the extender. The only question I might pose is - you're comparing lenses, but not on the same camera; I don't know how much difference that will make!

I agree with Loren. On my 25" screen (admittedly much smaller than a "wall hanger"), I prefer the photo of the kite in terms of sharpness.
