Hello,

This question is for Nikon Mirrorless users...I have been using the D850 since it came out. I am primarily a landscape photographer (not professional) and do some wildlife. I understand the various advantages the mirrorless cameras have for wildlife but am not clear on if there are advantages for landscape photography. I am considering the Z8 so I would appreciate any information you can share with me.

A second part...is there any quality loss or problem if I continue to use my current Nikon lenses with the adapter for the Z cameras?

Thank you so much, and if this has already been discussed I appologize.

David

Come on. This is 21st century, market-leading EOS technology. It's been well over a decade of market leadership from Canon in the area of Image Stabilization. This leading Canon IS technology includes the 'smarts' to sense a stable tripod platform and not cause any problem. You're more likely to forget to turn IS back on than it will impact your long-exposure images. Passing around outdated suggestions and non-Canon best practices is what makes the internet such a cesspool.

I agree, and I always forget to turn it off anyway...

Thanks. I need a personal guide, not a tour.

They both show Private Guides as an option...

I was in Iceland last March and shot many at F1.8, 2 seconds, and up to ISO 1600. Had no issues with noise. Sacrifice ISO for shutter speed to freeze the action. Any moon at all will light up the snow covered landscape.

Go to at least one ice cave while you are there and for sure go to Vestrahorn for a sunrise and even Aurora at night.

Nice. Is that Hallett's in the background?

Yes it is, the opposite side of what you see at Bear Lake.

Beautiful landscape. The water looks inventing for a dip. But you would turn bluer than the water I’m sure!

I live in Colorado but have never taken the hike to Lake Haiyaha in Rocky Mountain NP. As of last year it has a beautiful milky blue glacial silt color and here is what happened...

"The water of Lake Haiyaha is now a unique milky shade of turquoise not commonly seen in lakes of Rocky Mountain National Park but it is not from blue algae. Rather, a rockslide on June 28, 2022, exposed glacier sediment in Chaos Canyon above Lake Haiyaha. Summer rains caused this sediment, sometimes referred to as glacial flour, to flow into the lake."

It is worth the hike if you are in the area.

This photo was from yesterday.

Been to Fairbanks for the Aurora probably 6 or 7 times. We always stayed in Fairbanks and drove up to Cleary Summit to view the Aurora at that lodge a couple of times. Another good place close to the lodge is Ski Land. They used to allow viewers, for a small fee, to use their small building to come in and out of to get warm. They also had hot drinks and snacks. Even if they don't do that anymore, it is worth it to drive the very short distance to there and use their large parking area to watch the sky.

In Fairbanks I would highly recommend taking a couple of night tours with The Aurora Chasers. Ronn and Marketa are the greatest couple and the most knowledgeable people I know about the aurora. It isn't cheap but they use a variety of apps to know the best locations to go to each night. They use a great van equipped with computer monitor for useful videos explaining the aurora, how to photograph the night sky, etc.

You MUST have a vehicle or building to go in and out of to stay warm, it is often 30-40 degrees F below zero in February. Make sure you read up on how to take your camera gear in and out of the cold (another topic).

Yes Chena Hot Springs Resort is also a good place. Would recommend staying there a night or two. Check out their website as they take you up to the top of a scenic hill to watch the aurora and they have a teepee to get warm and have hot drinks. They have a good restaurant and of course the hot springs!

My other highly recommended place to go is Yellowknife NWT Canada. We have been there 3 times. There are also tours you can take there or drive yourself from town. DO NOT go there without going to Aurora Village! Very cool place to watch the Aurora, look up there website.

Too much to get into for this short reply but perhaps my favorite places are Iceland and the Lofoten Islands. Easy to do on your own or numerous day or longer tours for the Aurora.

Have a great time, we are approaching the peak of the solar cycle!
