That's an understatement, but Windows 10 makes it easier because it does everything automatically. Even Windows 10 Pro does everything automatically now. I'm not a fan of automatic updates either for my computers or my phones, but it is what it is. Fortunately, restore points are created each day at 6:00 p.m., so if I need to do something and an update is preventing it but I don't have time to figure out what's going on, I simply restore, do what I need to do, and then let it update itself again.

30 years in the industry... First thing I learned was if there's no display, is it plugged in?, and 2nd, has the intensity been turned down completely (back in the days of screen burn)? As a user, reboot. As a debugger, gather data before rebooting.

I think it all depends on the use: my HTPC gets restarted maybe once a month, probably less. My desktop runs days without a reboot. Same with my laptop when it's "home"; on the road, shutdown every night. Having said that, when a problem appears, first thing is to try a reboot. I learned that when traveling and logging in to my home desktop, to prevent lockups, I have my router and desktop reboot every night... TP-Link smart plugs...

One large system I maintained ran for over a year without a reboot, and that was due to external influences - oh, hp unix, how I miss you.

Always a trade-off: keep on and "clutter" can build up. Turn off and on, miniscule power surges can take their toll.
30 years in the industry... First thing I learned... (show quote)

I have six computers in my home office:
The Beast, which runs all my photo and video editing software;
Music computer which plays thousands of digital music files over the course of the year using VLC, Music Bee, and Audacity;
Multitasking computer which runs all my Excel spreadsheet tracking files and my Word files;
Real estate computer;
Backup computer, which receives modified files each day;
Laptop computer, which runs my Powerpoint presentations for all the Southern California and Arizona clubs I'm a member of.

The only computer running Adobe software is The Beast.

According to my Excel spreadsheet that tracks purchases and maintenance on my computers, here's the last times they were shut down and rebooted:

The Beast - 9/26/2020, 9/24, 9/22, 9/20, 9/18 - 16 - 14 - 12 - 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 2.... Every two days all the way back to 6/4/2017. Prior to that, never. Bought on 6/26/2016.
Music computer - Never. Sleeps only. Bought on 8/13/2017.
Multitasking computer - Never. Sleeps only. Bought on 8/13/2017.
Real estate computer - Never. Sleeps only. Bought on 10/06/2017.
Backup computer - Never. Sleeps only. Bought on 6/26/2016.
Laptop computer - Never. Sleeps only. Bought on 9/30/2019.

As someone more famous than me once said, "It is what it is."

And smokers feel because they've smoked a pack/day for 30 years... I've worked in the IT industry for some 40 years, and used to get paid an exorbitant amount for such advice. Yes, there's nothing 'wrong' w/hibernating, I have to do it occasionally, but it can cause problems. "It" in this case means running your system for too long a period without reinitializing. As a power user of MS Outlook, I've had issues after rebooting that morning and have had to reboot. A common symptom is a message stuck in the Outbox.
Over time, we do identify those areas of vulnerability. And I would expect that over time, Adobe will identify and correct their memory management issues. But also over time, we do introduce new vulnerabilities in the systems such as the OS and programs/applications.
I will also tell you that as far as Adobe is concerned, they regard their memory management as a low-priority concern as they have bigger fish to fry.
Yours,
Chuck

I worked in the computer industry from 1978 to 2016, so I'm quite familiar with the problems. Lots of problems can be caused by lots of things.

"reboot the computer every 2-3 days"? In addition to memory, there are a myriad of cues, stacks, and tables that need to be refreshed/reinitialized. It is rare that at the end of the day I fail to update my security files, delete the cookies I do not want to keep, and delete orphan system objects. And then turn it off. Else you will have problems.
Yours,
Chuck

There's nothing wrong with sleeping or hibernating your computer unless you use Adobe programs because they don't play nicely with memory. Before I got seriously involved with Adobe programs in 2012, I only turned my computers off or rebooted them when the power failed. Otherwise, they slept and hibernated. Never had any memory problems until I got all these Adobe programs.

All of Adobe's programs (Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, ACR, Bridge, Lightroom, Elements) freeze on me at various times. The solution, provided to me by a group of computer science students at Cal Berkeley, is to reboot the computer every 2-3 days to clear the memory. I never thought memory would be a problem when one has 65 GB and 12 TB on 6 SSD, but apparently Adobe programs are memory hogs and refuse to release any memory they have captured while working on files. The bigger the file and the more complicated the task, the more memory the program uses, and refuses to release.

Resizing as a separate issue, I don't get why any jpeg file would be so big? On my 26 megapixel camera at full resolution the largest jpeg file size is 9.1 megabytes.

Depends on one's use. I do a lot of final editing and design layout for people writing books. One publisher in Thailand wants the original picture at 300 ppi. I don't understand their need, but I've learned not to argue with my Clients and their overseas publishers. Consequently, I have thousands of pictures in the 20 MB range. Here's just one. The original came from a Canon Rebel T6i and was 9.1 MB.

If red and green are problem colors, why are they used on traffic lights. Just curious.

Color blindness for red and green is the reason for the positioning of lights on traffic signals. Red on top or left. Green on bottom or right.

Since colors in digital imagery can be so easily faked in Photoshop, does it really matter?

Is it possible to fake a color that a person who is color blind cannot see or distinguish?

I do a lot of presentations to cactus & succulent clubs throughout the nation on nature's geometry in succulents. One day a color-blind person recommended that I not use red arrows and green arrows on the same slide because both colors looked the same to him. And certainly don't say, "The red arrow shows.... and the green arrow shows...." I took his recommendation to heart and changed my presentation to take that into account.

I take an average of 500 pictures a day, and the first thing I do when I get home from my 6-hour adventure is convert all my CR3 files to DNG. From what I understand, the information discarded is information I don't need, such as focus points, ISO, shutter speed, etc. I also have not found any software that has any problems working with DNG files, including all Adobe products, Corel, Topaz, and many more.

I use Quick Access at least 100 times a day. It's one of the most useful tools in Windows 10.

I have over 5000 transactions on Ebay. You have to use some COMMON SENSE on ebay. If they say things like "the last time I used it it was working" WALK AWAY FAST, if you see any RED FLAGS, WALK AWAY, yes, it is that easy.
I only buy MINT IN THE BOX. I only buy from folks who say things like, "everything is working great" or, "only used it twice".

New Photoshop also does the job. It's not called "keystone correction" though. It's the "Perspective Crop Tool."

I'm mainly interested in macrophotography and I use a D850 with a Sigma 105mm micro and various customised lighting and stuff that I'm very happy with. However I'm developing a bit of a taste for some more wildlife photography, mainly birds, the use will be when walking rather than using hides etc so portability is important, and usually no tripod. I have a 'spare' D610 body and I was thinking of the Sigma 150-600mm as a lens. I'm reading that the S model is a lot heavier than the C and that there appears little difference otherwise.
Does anyone have constructive comments on these lenses?

Hi, fellow Uglyhedgehogs!
I am new to the group and I like to draw on your knowledge.
I am not as experience photographer as most of you. My shooting is mostly done on vacations. I love landscaping and
photos of architectural.
Since I know have time, I am going to work on my photos and I find myself wondering which is best, Lightroom or Photoshop Element.
I have a lot (thousands) of pictures to work on. Many are JPEG (until I learned)about raw. Now I shoot on both. Unfortunately most of the pictures are in jpeg format.
Is Lightroom only a subscription base software?
Which is easier to learn? Which is gives better control?
With all that info, which would you recommend- Lt or E? Would you have both for different applications?
Thank you. In advance!
Hi, fellow Uglyhedgehogs! br I am new to the group... (show quote)

About a decade ago when I went to an Adobe users convention, one of the Adobe techs explained the difference between Photoshop, Lightroom, and Elements thusly:

Photoshop is the whole shop, as stated in the name.
Lightroom is a room in the shop, as stated in the name.
Elements are tools in the room, as stated in the name.
In other words, Photoshop can do anything and everything that Lightroom and Elements do.

Since I have all three programs, ever since that convention I have endeavored to determine if he was right. He was.
