The unit that I have is a radio remote comprised of a trigger that attaches via a custom cord to the wired shutter release port of many cameras via special cables and a remote sending unit that has worked for up to 100 feet for me. You order the basic unit and then order the cable that fits your camera. I got mine from BH.

Thanks Sarge. I shot 96 frames that night of which 66 were useable. The SX50 is a fun camera to use for many situations but I still prefer my D300s when getting the picture is really important.

When I usually shoot fireworks on July 4th I use one of my DSLRs and shoot on manual. This year I decided to see how my SX50, set on scene-fireworks would do. It was mounted on a light weight, Manfrotto tripod and I used a Vello remote trigger release so that I could watch the show more easily. The camera selected ISO 80, 2 seconds at f8 for all of the shots.

As I have read this blog over the last 2 years I have noticed some interesting discussions about straps that attach to the tripod mount. I have one of these and have the same concerns that others have expressed about the safety of these. I went to a street fair recently and noticed a shooter using a strap made by Fast Fire. I found out where he got, bought one and really like it. It attaches to the right strap lug of the body. Go to www.fastfirecamerastrap.com to see it. It has good heavy duty hardware and a comfortable strap.

Any good quality dslr will do what you are asking for. The important thing is to really learn how to use it - all of it. I suggest you go to a camera store and ask for advice, try out what they suggest and the take a couple of extension classes at one of your local higher education institutions to really learn how to shoot a dslr. I use both a Nikon d90 and a Nikon d300s with either an 16-85 or an 18-200 lens for sports. I have been shooting a long time but when I switched to a dslr from film I started taking night classes on how to shoot these cameras. So far I have taken 6 of them, all 6 weeks long so let me again urge you you to take at least a couple of classes.

I have used one for many months now as a sometimes "walking around" lens and for wild life. The only filter I use is a polarizer. Good lens for when I am at the ranch shooting wildlife and can only carry one lens but it is heavy.

32 mb is a small card that some makers put in the camera just to get you started. Think in terms of GB(gigabites) not mb. A 4 GB card will hold about300 RAW files for me and over twice that if I am shooting jpeg.

dpreview.com has great, full feature reviews of cameras including sample pictures. This might be a good place to go to help your reseach. I shoot Nikon mostly because that is what the friend who got me started years ago was shooting but I do use Canon for my "pocket" cameras because of the swivel and tiltable view screens.

I start out with a daylight white balance setting and adjust within that setting. I also shoot in manual mode at around f11 and can change the color by changing the shutter speed. An nd filter #2 is sometimes useful if trying to bring out dark hills or mountains. I would be using either my Nikon d90 or d300s when doing this but can get similar results with my Canon SX10.
