Quick update on the serious side:
My current in-use cameras are also my favorites. I've shelved my medium format Pentaxs - too bulky for many tasks and too expensive for just lugging around.
I currently use 2 DSLRs; one for wide angle (full frame sensor, Canon 5D Mk3) and one for telephoto (APS-C sensor, Canon 7D Mk2). (That combo optimizes the wide/tele spectrum for me.) When on a shoot they are both with me (along with a spare 5D Mk2 body).
But when just hiking, cruising, walking around, family gatherings,
I have come to really like the Sony RX1000 III. I am NOT and P&S fan, but this model is making me a convert.
The Sony RX1000 III is a pretty amazing P&S that seems to do most everything I need for casual shooting. It has both intelligent auto modes while offering full manual control of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and focus. Megapixel and RAW files are more than adequate, and JPEG and RAW can be taken concurrently.
Popular "gimmicks" such as in-camera auto HDR and stitched panoramas are also offered.
It is more expensive than some consumer lever DSLRs ($800), but with the addition of a circular polarizer and ND filter, I'm happy most of the time.
I've also resigned myself that there is no "best camera;" there is just the one that you are comfortable enough with that it can do most if not everything you want it to do well.
Time to shoot the remaining fall colors as a cold snap is due here tomorrow.
