Going Saturday to shoot either the 6A or 5A Football Championship game, not sure which one yet. Will be shooting with the Nikon D500 I rented for two weeks. Crop sensor but playing around a little for a couple of days has been wonderful. I can see why people say this may be the best sport DX camera ever. We will see, hope I can at least get a few excellent shots to compare to yours. Thanks
Good luck with the championship game. Please post some of your work. Never used the D500. This year I am using the Nikon D860 and it is a great camera for sports.

Thanks! Marshall’s game with Charlotte last week was canceled. COVID problem at Charlotte. We don’t have another game scheduled until Dec. 5. Hopefully it will be played. It has been a challenge shooting games this year. Cancellations and last minute schedule changes and photographer restrictions have been tough. We are only allowed to shoot from the North end zone, no sidelines or South end zone.
So we are shooting into the sun for much of the game. I’ve been shooting Marshall football for 40+ years and have never seen anything like this.

Enjoy. Don’t let the nerds convince you to sell a kidney for new lenses. They have a grossly exaggerated notion of just how resolution works.

When you double the pixel count, you get a 40% gain in resolution, not a doubling. 40% is useful but not a whole new game.

It’s the totality of the D850’s capabilities that earned its reputation. A bump up in resolution is just one element, hardly the main essence of a great camera. Use and enjoy the WHOLE camera (and keep both your kidneys).

Agreed. I use the D850 with older lenses both zoom and prime and see nothing that would make me buy new lenses. I have posted, in the sports photography section, images from a Marshall University football game shot with the D850 and a 400 f2.8 lens that is at least 15 years old. My wife uses the camera with the Nikon 200-400 f4 lens and the results are amazing.

The Thundering Herd stays perfect with a 42-14 victory over MTSU. The game was played on the 50 year anniversary of the plane crash that killed 75 including most of the football team

I think the sensor is more like 45 mp, not 24.

I know. Don’t know why I typed 24.

That was lucky!
Hope you have the good lenses to use with it.

I have read in many posts that older lenses won’t give as good results as newer ones on the 850. I’m not trying to start any arguments, just giving my observations. For football I use a Nikon 400 f2.8
Lens that was purchased at least 15 years ago and works perfectly with the 850 as does my older 80-200 and 16-35. Again not trying to start any arguments, just saying what works for me.

That is what I'm reading about now. I shoot mainly wildlife, so I do crop quite a bit. Gary

You can crop a lot. Obviously I made a mistake in my original post. The 850 has 45 mp not the 24 I said. Sorry.

I have had the D850 for several months. I think you will be very happy with it. The low light capability is very good. I have pushed it to the limit a few times with good results. The 24 mp gives you a lot of room for cropping without degrading the quality. It handles very well and the controls and very accessible.
It compares favorably with the D5 in image quality. The frame rate is not quite as fast, but the exposure and focus systems are in a par with the D5

I have shot many different assignments in many different lighting situations and have always gotten very good results.
The attached photo was shot with the D850 with a 400 f2.8 lens from one end zone of a TD at the other goal line and was very heavily cropped.
