I couldn't disagree with joe's post more. Yes modern lens coating has improved, but which would you rather have break if your lens drops, a filter or the front lens element. I think the answer is a no-brainer. Buying a decent filter is insurance and to my mind, necessary.

I did a little research and decided that buying a better uv filter from either B&W or Hoya made a lot of sense even though the price is 3 to 4 times what a Tiffen filter costs. Both are high optical quality glass with brass frames and excellent coatings. I bought a B&W "nano" uv for a new nikkor lens I just purchased and am very pleased with the product.

NikonUSA briefly had stock and shipped some last week, but is backordered again. New D850s are coming slowly through the production pipeline, with demand remaining high. Adorama has about 300 orders on their waiting list, and I would imagine B&H has a similar backlog. I was watching to see if massive numbers of bodies were forthcoming, but that is not the case. I put a preorder in at B&H last week, and they have no information about when stock will arrive, they are just filling orders in the sequence of the waiting list. My credit card is not charged until the body is available to ship. There is another issue out there, and that is xqd cards. Longsys, the company that acquired Lexar from Micron, will be producing lexar cards again. Right now, only Sony has xqd cards available. I was able to pre-order a 128 gb lexar with a usb reader for $159, but who knows when it will arrive.

If I have to guess, I think a 6-8 week timeline is expected on the D850. The question I have for the original thread poster is what lenses does he have with his D750?

As long as your old nikkor lenses have the AI tab, it will work in manual mode and register the f-stop. If you didn't upgrade the lens mount and the only index for the lens to register aperature to the meter is the old metal tab that fit into the FTN's meter, then the lens will not register f-stop to the sensor/computer. I had to upgrade all of my nikkor lenses when I went to my F3 body, so all of my old glass will work with the D850 (manual focus of course, and aperature priority).

No, the D850 needs the extended battery and grip to achieve 9 frames per second. With the in camera battery, the fastest is 7fps. Nikon did not make this camera to replace the D5. Even so, the D850 has very impressive stats, and is everything one could hope for as a successor to the 810. My hope is that the update of the D750 will have some of the features of the D850 (like Expeed 5 processor, touch screen tilting LCD, and 4k video), and perhaps a scaled down version of the back sensor cmos (at 36 megs?). No one knows anything really about the D750 successor, just all kinds of rumors. I wonder if Nikon will offer the D850 as a kit with the 24-120 mm nikkor. I don't imagine that will happen for at least 6 months or so.

the old nikkor lenses had a metal prong that grabbed the pin of the meter on the FTN prism. Nikon changed the way the cameras registered F stop with the addition of a metal lip added to the old lenses (all of my older lenses were modified by Nikon).

I have got a slew of old nikkor lenses (fitted with the adaptor ring to work on my F3 body. Some of these lenses are nice glass, and I wonder if I can use any of them on my digital body. I know there is a way to use the older lenses on a D750 (I saw an article), but how do I use them on the body that I own. I have a 24 mm f2.8, 55 mm f3.5 micro, 80-200 mm zoom, 35-105 mm f3.5-5.6 zoom with macro, and 50 mm f1.4. When I tried with the 55 mm macro, I have to put it on M, and the camera does not register an f-stop, and when I try to take a picture, no image is recorded. It is probable that the d5100 body is incapable of processing the image from the old lenses.

Any thoughts?

Hi--
I am new to the forum, but I have been taking pictures for ages. I learned on my father's Leica 1-G as a kid, and started with a Nikon F in my 20's. I've stayed with Nikon through the F3, but started with Canon digital Elph, and haven't taken film photos since. Currently I have a Canon SX-600 that my wife uses, and since 2011, a Nikon D5100. I have been thinking about going full frame, but I want to wait for the new version of the D750. I am hoping that it will have a new chip and image processor, and 4k movie ability, but none of the rumors about a replacement for the D750 have anything, other than maybe a 1/8000 shutter speed. I have a whole bunch of old non AF nikkor lenses, but need some advice on what full frame lens to buy. I have DX format lenses: 18-55 mm, 55-300 mm and 18-200 mm (which is the only lens I typically use now) Any thought about what FX nikkor I should buy with a new FX body would be appreciated.

Thanks
