Next year will be a good time to visit - I hope. This year has been kind of a washout - literally. Too much rain and not enough color. We have trees with no leaves, brown leaves, and green leaves.

Same here, Jerry. I'm about 25 miles north of Binghamton NY. The Adirondacks were spectacular about a week ago, but are now well past peak. I need to check out the Finger Lakes region if weather will allow before it's too late.

Nice effort. I agree about the water needing to look like water is seen by the naked eye. The special exposures have their place as well, but I like your take on this scene, very much.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words, cambriaman.

I am no pro myself and not a perfectionist I judge pictures by their content and yours allow us all to enjoy places we others may never make it to. I have many old old pictures of families and such and they are all way less than perfect, but they still have a great story.

Thanks troutbum, and thanks for the thoughtful reply.

So my question is the Butter Milk Falls of the north more impressive than the one in the southern tier? My 2nd question is why did you wait so long to submit? Keep snapping

The falls near Ithaca NY is also very nice, just different. I have not been over that way for quite a while and should make it a point to go there. Why did I wait
so long to submit here? I'm not sure, but probably because most of my pictures are just snap shots, and this one is really no exception. I wanted to make my way to the base of the falls and get a shot from that perspective, but the rocks and granite boulders I would have had to walk on were covered with wet pine needles and were very slippery. Maybe next time I'll be braver. Here's a shot that I took in 2007 with a Fujifilm bridge camera that only shot jpeg. It was the beginning of my digital days, and I blew out the sky and probably over cooked the shot as well. That's why I wanted to shoot it again with better equipment
and a lot more knowledge. Oh well.

Nice shot Charles. A suggestion if I may, re-take this and drag your shutter and create the pattern on the water that does resemble "buttermilk." Start by using 1 second and see what results you obtain. It is strictly personal choice so work until your get what you find acceptable and go from there. The longer you are opened the more "buttermilk' you churn.

Thanks, davidrb. I'll give that a try the next time I get up there, but it might not be this year. It's about a 4 1/2 hour drive from where I live. So many great things to shoot and so little time!

Nice capture. Looks like water as it should. I see a lot on here that shoot water much too slow and it looks like milk. Good jpb.

Thanks, Hal. I too like water to look like water, and in this case it is very powerful and shouldn't look like cotton candy, IMO.

This is my first post to the gallery. I thought I'd give it a try to see if I could do it. This is a shot of Buttermilk Falls on the Raquette River in the
Adirondack Mountains near Long Lake New York taken on last Sunday.

Interesting that yours was changed to Sound & Vision when mine was transferred to Outdoor Photographer.

I also have received Outdoor Photographer as a replacement for Shutterbug. It's not great, but I'm okay with it.

Hey Charles, thanks for the reply. Using shuttercount.com with a JPG file, it does display the "Image Number" in the EXIF data, which I would guess it to be the same as the camera shutter count.

Vince

Image number is probably not the same as shutter count, Vince. Here's a link where this is explained fairly well.

PIE will give you the shutter count for your Nikon DSLR. Here's a link to the free download.

Just checked and shutter count is listed under Nikon, not makers note. I was thinking of a different program, but anyway, with a Nikon DSLR the shutter count is always embedded in the EXIF data. Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul,

I will try the Nikon site later, as you have to submit a "captcha" to prove you are human, but it said the captcha was shut down. The Nikon site also said to shoot a small JPG, save that file and download that file from the camera to the shutter count website. The other sites I used were www.shuttercount.com and www.camerashuttercount.com Both those sites listed the D800 as being able to read the count.

Actually, as I was writing this, I had the shuttercount website still up, and looked at it again, and it said "Nikon's NEF, Pentax's DNG and PEF, Canon's CR2 raw file format are supported", so it would seem that it would have to be a Nikon NEF file, but it also says Max File size is 30MB, so that would present another problem as the NEF file sizes are all over 40MB, usually between 42-45MB. I guess if I shot a single photo in crop mode, which I have never done, I could upload that one as it would be somewhere between 15-18MB and should be able to be read.
Thanks Paul, br br I will try the Nikon site late... (show quote)

Competition in the dark at night? Never happens! (Do you see any lights on the bikes?)
The pictures are taken outdoors, probably with a slightly overcast sky. If I took a picture with ISO 25000, 1/400 s and f 4.0 they would be totally overexposed!
The data he presented are totally fake!

No, the data is totally correct as he presented it. I downloaded the photos and checked the EXIF data using PIE (Picture Information Extractor). Looks to me like you owe SS an apology!
