I do not like having to download an app to get a product working. I have a Samsung Galaxy phone that's several years old. In order to get my TP-Link Deco set up, I have to get the app installed on my phone - but I can't. I click on "Install," and it just cycles around but doesn't install.

Fortunately, I have a newer Moto e6 (2021), and that was able to install the app. Would someone else have to spend $1,000 for a new iPhone, or similar? Suppose you don't have a cell phone?

Damn, you and your fellow countrymen sure seem to have a hard time with anything to do with TV, WiFi etc. Could it possibly have anything to do with your huge selections of service providers? Service providers that from the comments I have read here would suggest there is no in-home service provided for the services offered? I suppose there is no point comparing what you Americans have in terms of TV and WiFi services compared to us Canadians, but from where I sit it seems you Americans get the short straw when it comes to TV and WiFi services. I would not put up with the crap you go through to get your services up and operating. I would just cancel a sloppy service/no service situation and move to one of the other four service providers in my area. That is correct, only four, and they each service all of Canada and furthermore, our federal government legislates that they comply with their advertised service levels.

I'm wondering if I should get a new router. I'm currently using a seven-year-old D-LINK DIR-842, which sells for $50. The top-rated routers sell for around $250, which is out of the question for me. I admit that I know nothing about router specs, but I'm thinking that something reasonably priced might be better than the one I have - or not.

All opinions gratefully accepted.

As I assume you know Jerry, distance from the server to your modem/router impacts your results. Also, download/upload speeds are dependent on your ISP's stated service speeds. As I am in Canada, I use a Canadian ISP on a 1 Gig service plan which has a theoretical download speed of 1000Mbps and upload speed of 100Mbps. My actual download speed this morning was 930Mbps and upload was 102Mbps using the IPS's latest modem/router.
Your test results would seem to be low for a reasonably new router, especially your upload speed. Typically, I find my upload speeds are approximately 10% of my download speeds. Before you spend your hard earned dollars on an new modem/router, I suggest you talk to your ISP and determine what your down/upload speeds should be given your distance from the NY Server. Just maybe your ISP may find a fault in the distribution system assuming you are on either a telephone or cable line type of service. If over the air service, then as I have had no experience with that type of service, I have no suggestion to make. Best of luck Jerry.

Garth

I am always in awe of your photography Regis! Was that a tripod shot? Regardless, simply put, "fantastic"!

Thanks for the clarification. Maybe it was Leopards I was thinking of. Maybe my mind was self identifying as an idiot.
But just momentarily....... :}} Never too old to learn, huh? Tx again

Hate to say it but I think my capability to learn new things is about exhausted, but I try.

Hi Garth,
Sounds like a great plan. Dreams do come true. Safe travels in October. Looks like we could be going home to snow!!
Kindest regards.

Have a safe trip home. Guess you are getting the snow storm we had here two weeks ago. Snow is gone now and starting this weekend our temps are supposed to reach the low 60's F, (15-16 degrees C). Spring is here!!

Garth

Maybe they were very confused Cheetahs self-identifying as lions that day.......???

These really are some interesting images. Didn't know that lions climbed trees.

Lions in trees is a fairly common event if there are trees available that can/will support their weight. Certainly it is not as common as Leopards, which are often found in trees. Cheetahs, not so much, primarily because their claws are not sharp like other feline species. Cheetah claws are similar to a dog's claws, non-retractable and designed to assist the Cheetah in its blindingly fast acceleration capability.

Hi Garth, this is the web address for the elephant sanctuary, plettenbergbay.elephantsanctuary.co.za it is possible you have visited there. Have you been to Tenikwa wildlife sanctuary just a little way out of Plett? It is a great place my avatar was taken there when I walked with a keeper and two cheetahs. I also booked a guide to take me on a photo tour of the animals. They do not do the early morning walks anymore. It is a great place well worth a visit, although looking at their website it appears to be more commercial than when I visited.
Website, tenikwa.com

Have a great visit in October, we only have a few days left before we head back home to the UK. Had a great month in this beautiful country.
Hi Garth, this is the web address for the elephant... (show quote)

Good evening Sylvia;

Thank you so much for the link to the Plettenberg Elephant Sanctuary website. No, we have not visited this site but most certainly will next October. Shiela and I are patrons of the Knysna Elephant Park and specifically of the African Elephant Reseach Unit (AERU) which has its laboratory on the KEP site. As a consequence, we spend a minimum of a week at KEP each time we visit South Africa. Have even considered aquiring a permanent residence in Plettenberg Bay and spending up to six months there and the other six months here in Surrey, BC, Canada. In that way we could enjoy twelve months of summer! Probably, most likely will not happen, but it is nice to dream. Enjoy the remainder of your vacation! Regards, Garth

Yes he certainly is a big guy with beautiful tusks. There is also a sanctuary at Plettenberg Bay where you can interact with the elephants.

Good afternoon Sylvia;

Shiela and I will be in Plettenberg Bay in October and would like to visit the elephant park in Plettenberg Bay. By chance do you have the address or its approximate location? We've visited the WildBird Sanctuary, Wild Cat Sanctuary, Wolf Sanctuary and the Reptile Sanctuary, all in the Plettenberg area but have not visited the elephant sanctuary in Plett. Will certainly take in that sanctuary as well when we visit Plettenberb Bay in October, thank you for the tip.

Garth

Pleased you enjoyed them Garth and thank you very much for your kind comment. The furthest we have been on this trip is Hermanus with just six days left before we return to the snowy UK. It was a lovely experience when we went to the elephant park about four years ago.

It is indeed a wonderful experience although it has changed over the last several years. No riding the elephants any more and there are only five left at this park in Knysna. There are however another nine elephants in a separate herd kept at a park approximately 25 kilometres east of Plettenberg Bay. Those nine are not as habituated to human contact as the five at Knysna, as a result they only have contact with their keepers. Shiela and I have had the privilege of visiting this second herd on several occasions under close guidance of the Head Elephant Manager, Mr. Geoffrey Phiri. Attached is a picture of Shiela and Mr. Phiri standing beside Harry a six ton bull with the dubious title of having killed two of his keepers and fathering several of the young elephants via Sally, the matriarch at the Knysna park.

Beautiful set Sylvia. Any plans to visit other parts of South Africa on this visit, such as the Knysna Elephant Park?

It was just a general question about why people like pancake lenses, but evidently it upset you. I see all sorts of offers for discussion on this forum that I ignore. I have never used a pancake lens, but imagine that they could be handy for grab shots and would help to make the camera you're carrying much more portable. This forum would be rather pointless all we did was send questionaires to each other and then shared the results. Have you used a pancake lens? How did it work for you? Thanks

Yes I have used and do use a pancake lens, specifically my Olympus 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 EZ ED MSC lens. Yes, it is very handy for "grab shots" and certainly makes either of my two Olympus camera bodies more compact and portable. Is it the best lens in my kit for resolution, isolation of subject from background or sharpness? No it is not, but it is the smallest, lightest lens in the 14-42mm focal length range (28mm-84mm FF equivalent) micro 4/3 lens on offer from either Olympus or Panasonic.

Obviously, neither you or Architect1776 understood my sarcastic reply to Architect1776's post. If there is a next time, which I doubt, I'll do my very best to use a simple direct answer. Fair enough??
