Looks like a nice fishing hole too. Saco river in Maine is a great relaxing escape from reality but the Allagash river white water runs are an adrenaline junkies dream. Especially in an open canoe (not kayak). My photos (if any survived) are in storage or I would share. Downsizing from 2000 sq ft to 850 has challenges. Hope you get to visit your fishing hole often.

After they messed it up they leave it to me to contact the software vendor to re activate my licenses. They didn't know anything about my software either. In fact they know nothing of any software that I use often. The initial problem was I can't uninstall a software package to do the update. The run ccleaner trying to fix that but it still didn't uninstall.

So sorry you had that experience. I know a lot of great techs but just like every other industry, there are bad apples. I would look online for another computer place that ranks really high with its client base. If you are still having issues, they should be able to help (look for higher than 4 stars and more than 50 reviews if possible). CCleaner can uninstall software but again, armature method not much better than add/remove programs. That is not a program a qualified tech would choose for that problem. You need to find a good tech in your area.

CCleaner was used by my IT tech and it wiped off a number of software license I have. It also unregistered some programs and made them not working. It was a pain for me to fix it. Yup the IT people just messed it up they don't know how to fix it.

You already got an excellent reply but I am going to add to that. CCleaner allows you to do a back-up of the system before you clean the registry. If a real IT was honestly using this (instead of far superior options) he/she should have made a back-up. Also, unless the Tech did a secure wipe of the drive right after running ccleaner, it would be easily restored by any qualified tech. This is a program I let the computer illiterate use so I would suggest you ask other techs in your area the cause of your problem and see if they don't put blame elsewhere as well.

Great, WildBill. Because MS Windows has a configuration option for SSD, that means
it's fully optimized for SSDs--according to you.

Windows is also "set up for" security. Just not very well. Some things have to be designed
into an OS, not added as an afterthought. OSes that started out as public access time-sharing
systems have good security; those that started out as single-user systems don't. Win3.1 didn't
even have a user login. And NT never ran as a public-access time-sharing system....

Wow, not scare tactics and useless dribble. I see you took my advice.

If you want to put out useful information like your comment I am replying to, that is awesome. If you want to challenge me, I Don't give a crap. I wont be baited. Qualifications beyond being old? Respect is used by real human beings and you should have tried that first. If you want to scare people with useless hot air and vomit insanity, I will speak up.

More like this and a lot less of your first comment and people will respect your opinion. More like this and people will even listen to you. All I ask is you treat people with a little respect when you comment. This is not politics, we are not debating pro-life and pro-choice, this is a photo site where we help each other. Your last comment is helpful.

Now to reply... Windows was crap and I used DOS. I don't care about 3.1, it is gone.

Windows 7-10 can be optimized to run on SSD with a handful of adjustments. Is it the best solution? For some but not for others... To your point, you cannot put an SSD in a system and expect it to run Windows 10 (as it was set up on the HDD) optimally. I did not include why you likely need a HDD to prolong the life of your new SSD either. He had a tech do the work so it should have been discussed and work done right. That is why you use a tech if you are not a geek yourself. BUT (back to point) A few adjustments and Windows runs very well and makes people very happy. That is the point.

Original poster is not a tech but he is happy. His system is faster and he is excited. Say you hope the tech made the necessary changes to windows so it runs better on the SSD but regardless, you would recommend using Lenux (insert whatever OS you like here) because you think it is better suited to his new system. That is helpful. Your last post was helpful. Do that.

Old guys that know what they are doing can be worth their weight in gold, if you can get past the "grumpiness" !!!!!!!! LOL

LOL... I can relate. Been programming computers since 1982. Building them after my IBM PS2 model 25 needed to be replaced... And I am a grumpy old man. LOL

There are various utilities that can help, too.
I like CCleaner. I have it run on startup. I have it in my "Recycle Bin"
Then I do the full "Cleaner" and "Registry" options once a week or so. Keeps it fairly clean.

CCleaner is not a bad program. Easy to use and people without great computer skills can take care of many issues without having to run to a tech every month. Also formats free space so you do not leave personal information on your drive.

I just went from a 240gb SSD to a 1TB SSD. My tech guy said a clone was possible. When I went back to pick it up he states that some programs might not recognize the new SERIAL # of the drive. I had to reregister three programs. I lost nothing but the time to resolve the registration keys.

I had a 1TB WD SSD ($150) put into my 6 year old lap top running Win7 and it made a huge difference. I also got a new battery even thought it is plugged in 95% of the time and that also made a huge difference.

I had the cloning and installation done by Best Buy's Geek Squad. Several programs didn't come over which surprised me. One of the programs that didn't come over was a 1998 version of Family Tree Maker. I had backup files, but I couldn't find the original installation disk. I thought I had lost 30 years of genealogy research. I had to shell out for a new version of the program which I don't really like.

Is this normal? I thought that cloning would bring everything over the way I had it before.

Unfortunately, this is normal. Older programs and hardware often have issues as you update. Nature of the beast.
