I will be up in your neck of the woods next week. What part of ID do you live? I'll be in CourdeLane…

I do it in post, PS CS6, it's part of the crop tool, a small icon of a 'level.' You can stretch a line across, or down, a straight reference in the composition and release. Or, in the same tool, rotate the picture to your liking and release. It's always part of my cropping process.

Nice one. However, a lot of those airplane videos are CGI - done in a computer. As a matter of fact, the popularity of fractal photography and design goes back to advertising for an airline. The advertiser wanted realistic-looking pictures of mountains to place behnid the flying plane. What he came up with was using fractals, which generated what looked like real mountains.

Did you actually watch the video Jerry? They explained what they did, and showed the equipment. I had the opportunity to talk with Clay Lacy once, who used to shoot film with a similar rig like the one in this video. As a video producer too I had the privilege of working with a lot of his footage as well. The advantage of Boeing's location, in the NW, was that they were close to mountains, water, and high plains desert for backgrounds. I don't remember working with any 'computer-animated footage, other than concept related programs.

Welcome home! 1st CAV, 17th Aviation, 65-66. We transitioned from 11th Air Assault Division at Ft Benning to 1st Air CAV and left by boat from east coast, through Panama Canal up to Long Beach, then straight to Vietnam. They didn't tell us 'officially' our destination until we left Long Beach, but it was obvious. Lot of years since then, but remember vividly still.

Sarge, those were some long tours! By choice? (Me - Army, An Khe, DaNang 68-69)

1stCAV-An Khe/Pleiku '65-66…transitioned from 11th Air Assault to 1st CAV at Fort Benning. Vietnamese are beautiful and intelligent people, many health care professionals here in the states. Sad to say, we (US) deserted, and left many high and dry, (those who helped the US) at the end of the war. Everything in life is about survival.

Nice. Just curious, did you convert your D70, or have someone else convert it to infared?

Looking for a "Really Right Stuff" B6 Bidirectional plate (with one 1/4"-20 screw) to use to attach a Canon EOS-450D, -500, -1000 or a Rebel XSi to an Arca-Swiss tripod head. It probably works for other cameras and looks pretty generic. The part number is on the underside of the plate.

Thanks,

Rich

Check out KEH, I think they're clearing out a lot of items and I remember several RRS plates.

Pete Souza was the official White House Photographer in Ronald Reagan's second term, and President Obama's two terms. He got his Master's from Kansas State and has returned there several times to speak to students, (wish I had attended). I've witnessed him working and I could tell that he was totally focused, pun intended.

I want to thank everyone for taking the time and willingness to offer a lot of thoughtful advice. There were so many great suggestions, all have merit. I also want to thank all the 'teachers' in the crowd. Without you I think our youth would be helpless and hopeless. I will try to pay the benefits of my mistakes and successes in photography forward.

That is very clear, and very important.

You probably cannot help the kid at all in any direct way, but you may be able to help the parent that talked to you. Find a photography teacher. The emphasis is on "teacher" not on "photography". The teacher need not even be much of a photographer, though that would really be nice. But an active or retired school teacher, who has special training and experience working with teens of the same age is the important part. You are not that, but you might well be able to find someone who is!
That is very clear, and very important. br br You... (show quote)

I resemble that remark: "You are not that…" How do you know?

Good catch, thank you and I should have known. I have a lot of books on photography, I'll just have to go through them and see if there is anything 'questionable' for young eyes.

Thanks, first, to everyone responding. There are many great suggestions.

Maybe some of you misunderstood my hesitance. I am not a teacher, just someone who loves photography. And, no, I am not charging money. I would love to discuss, demonstrate, critique (constructively of course) photography to a young person. I guess I was trying make the distinction that they be genuinely interested. If they are, then I think I would get just as much back, rewards of teaching a young person about lessons I've learned in my studies, and, rekindling my love for photography in the process. Maybe I'm unrealistic, expecting kids to be a little more resourceful and making an effort themselves to pursue something they're interested in, instead of being enabled by parents.

One of the first lessons I would teach is for them to subscribe to UHH. This is a great forum, and I am continuing to learn myself.

Maybe some of you out there have been approached by a parent, asking something like: "My little Johnnie, (or Suzy), has been told he/she has knack for photography, can you teach him/her?"

My first impression is that this parent is 'helicoptering' into the kid's space to try and motivate them to get busy and do something. When I first got interested in photography I pursued it on my own, reading books, magazines, etc. I've tried to mentor a teen before, but became frustrated when they didn't show the commitment and missed prearranged appointments.

I would be more than willing to discuss the many complexities of photography to a willing student, but I would like to see them approach me, asking for themselves, rather than the parent. Thoughts anyone? How would you handle the request from the well-meaning parent?

Read the fine print. Most require that you credit the music/source at the end of the video/presentation.
