Street photography in Vietnam
I will be traveling to Vietnam in March. I have navigated the etiquette of street photography in a number of countries and I'm wondering who has experience with this in Vietnam. How do people react in general and different context such as on the street, in parks, in markets etc. What about photographing people's children?

Photography is easy. It's crossing the street that gets very interesting. Enjoy your trip. Food is great. People wonderful. Traffic unbelievable.
I've traveled in Viet Nam in 2013 for 2 weeks. No-one seemed to mind me taking photos with the exception of one older lady who indicated when I pointed at her and then my camera for a shot, and I got a no-no with shaking of the head. Many times offering a small graturity will get you any shot.
Current exchange rate will get you 2,271,695 Vietnamese Dongs for a hundred dollars. That is over 2 million and a 1,000 Dong tip is awesome to the vietnamese people and worth a dollar to you.
Are you traveling to North Vietnam or South. Ho Chi Minh city is beautiful and the Zoo there is a treat. Close by are the Cu Chi tunnels which are very informative.
With air fare, hotel, tour car for 3 days and about 5 tours I spent $2,000.00 US Dollars over two weeks. Of course I speak a little Vietnamese and wasn't the rich American either. I had a great room with large bed, full bathroom, television and computer with western style breakfest included for $15.00 a night in District 1 tourist section.
Enjoy your visit

Interesting and very pertinent comments, Sarge. Thanks! /Ralph
Hanoi is lovely and a Mecca for street photography. Cross the street with purpose and conviction.
Thank you Sarge. I was also worried that with all the talk of purse snatching that someone might grab my camera while riding past on a motorcycle. A concern?
Yes it is. I am from Vietnam but that's more than 40 years ago. Last time I was there my brother strong advised me not to take my camera to the "Notre Dame" church in HCM. Next time I think I bring either the Canon AE-1 or A-1 to take picture of the church.

It's been many years since I was in Vietnam, so things may have changed considerably, but I would personally drink only bottled water (or beer) and get my drinks without ice. Amoebic dysentery is unpleasant, and those are often your own personal amoebas for life. Also, mosquito nets or sleeping under a fan is a good idea if you leave the windows open. When I travel to countries outside Europe, I typically take a bottle of Cipro with me - an excellent wide-spectrum antibiotic that's very effective for many food/water propogated stomach/intestinal upsets. Those that have visited more recently may have different advice.
I wonder if any Vietnam Vets return as tourists?

I was there in Feb 2013 for 2 weeks. Spent 2 tours in Nam Oct 64 to Aug 68 then May 69 to Feb 72.
Do a search on Vietnam - Day - you should see my posts.

Just wondering what unit you were with during your second tour. I was with the 199th Lt. Inf. Bde, as a helicopter pilot.
I found Vietnam to be a beautiful country, unfortunately both times I was there it wasn't the place to go for a tourist visit. Today, it's a great place to go see, but I have no desire to return.

Get your visa thru embassy or at airport in Sgn. I got on line and got screwed. Paperwork appears correct but once you get in SGN it was wrong and cost me an additional $300. It should have been 25$.
