D70 < D80. Had them both, and then the D90 which was a HUGE upgrade. My D90 makes great pictures, still, and you can get them either brand-new or for a song used.

What lenses do you have? Then we can tell you if a 3100 or 7100 is the next step past a D90.

Now I just need 2 things:

1. Some Kodachrome.
2. Money for a trip to Disney.

My FA needs new light seals, and a good cleaning. No one local will touch film cameras any more. Any recommendations for where to send it?

Thanks,
Dave

Yep! Freezer ZipLocks are great for this duty.

I used to go out on a 20 footer in NH up to 5 miles out. Put my D5100 in a food bag and cut a hole for the lens and then put a tight rubber band around the cutout. Clean lens front after coming back to dock.

Enjoy! Can't wait to see some pics - that zoom is on my list to try, someday, when I want to futz with another zoom!

See! The story about being chased by a moose had to be connected to one of the two lenses. If I had talked about the Canon 17-40mm, it would have been a foul. But this was clearly relevant to the discussion! :-P

Neat! If I can find one on EBay for $75 I just might try one also.

Nikon also made a 1000mm and a 2000mm Reflex-Nikkor.

No discussions of Mooses or other, likely better, lenses, please! The OP doesn't seem to want to hear it. :)

But the 14-24mm is bigger and heavier, which was useful when I was suddenly chased by a moose in Maine! ;-)

Buy the 35mm F1.8 DX and let her shoot for a bit.

Buy a second lens base on what she wants to do that she cannot do with that lens.

My 2-cents.

One of the problems is all that bright glass - easy to confuse a camera...

Learn how to use the central "spot" metering setting in your D90 (AF-C and rotate the rear dial to the central spot, IIRC); use this mode and put the spot on a player you want to focus on. Once you have your exposure metered, it is not going to change much in the course of an afternoon, usually, so you can use the rule of thirds to adjust for depth of field, etc.

That is the mirror lens - Reflex Nikkor. As I recall the 500mm is a fixed f8. Those lenses are either love or hate, it seems; but I've not seen much use of them on digital bodies. Will be interesting to see how you like it - please do post some shots.

Well, I bought a 500 mm Nikon for $75 and picked it up today at the post office. Got it on ebay. As it was dark when I picked it up I have not had much chance to try it out, but I got some face pics of my wife that seem ok. I am interested to try it again in daylight. But this lens is fixed aperture and manual focus reflex lens, a bit different from what you are thinking about.
