Make your mind up!

Love the mood! I know gals like this. The "moment" is perfect. It's typically well done GS. I know the square composition is coming back. I like it also, sometimes. With this image I find it becomes a stronger composition if I crop from the top, down to the shelf just below the "umbrella" handle. What do you think?

Green Reaper, I agree totally. I'm an old film, zone system, guy also. I have discovered that the new built in exposure systems are MUCH better than they use to be. I shoot some M, and mostly A. And best deal of all, for an old guy like me, is I have an OLY EM-1, and what I see on either the evf or the back screen is exactly what the photo will look when captured. Like you said, I look at the evf, if I don't like what I see I adjust till it looks right. I loved the old way years ago, but I really love the new way better. Glad you posted your thought. P.S. Remember ever bouncing a glass gallon bottle of fresh made fixer on the cement dark room floor? Now, I might drop a mouse, but he usually isn't dead & clean up is a ton easier.

The daffodils are blooming, but, mostly dried flowers on my walk with the dog. Practicing, practicing, practicing.

I can't say the subject turns me on, but the photo is a positive practice session. Without being able to download the image I can't see it real well, but the subject seems to in focus, sharp, and the dof well controlled. The composition is pleasing. I'd say you not only had a nice walk, you also had a good practice shoot. Congrats.

Jim, I love your image. The road leading me through the image. The beautiful green to yellow tones of the fields. The summer sky. To me, it's a beautiful relaxing image. I want to be there. I really appreciate relaxing images. This world needs more relaxation and less up tightness. Good work.

Definitely a WOW image to me. I really respect the ability to recognize the subject and then to have the mental vision to find this composition. The PP is one which I've not seen before. I like it. Well done.

Good morning Graham. I'm running late this morning and finally got to your image. My first, sleepy, thought was confusion, then, as a Midwestern country boy, I thought, "Ain't gonna say nothing about craftsmanship, processing skills, composition, nothing, nothing, nothing!" It's now about 2 cups of coffee later and there is some blood flow to the brain. Now, all I can say is that your have created an elegantly
entertaining, deceitful, delightful, humorous, and ingenious photograph. Outside of that, it hasn't got much going for it. Thank you for taking my rainy, yuck, morning and turning in uplifting laughter. Thanks also for sharing how another facet of you brain works. See ya. Lynn

Much nicer composition than the original. The yellow saturation is a little too much on my monitor. It would make a dynamite black and white.

Great idea Sony. Some time in the future I'll give it a try. Thanks much. Lynn

Its a fine shot now Lynn and as Sony says will make a fine black and white. Your fence will not be orange then!!

Thanks Billy. Good suggestion; not sure I could pull that off either. When I write it down on to do list & still miss it; maybe there's no hope. TNX AGN! Lynn

I completely agree with Graham on this one. I especially like that it is frame by cornfield and decorated with vines. Love the little woodpile. Nice!

Here's the other one in case anyone wants to see it.

Thanks Nightski. Yup, I missed the orange fence; but I was inspired to get rid of the power lines. TNX AGN! Lynn

I much prefer this version Lynn, the barn is in it's "place" We can see what it is and why it's there. With your previous picture of this barn you cropped tight to the the building and it left me wanting more. Cloning out the orange plastic fencing is easily doable and well worth the effort.

Graham

Thanks Graham. I agree completely. I had that "blankety-blank" fence on my to do list. And I blew it anyway! Thanks again. Lynn

Maybe we should look at this another way. Perhaps just the one heart should be in total focus, like a spotlight, and dof should be very narrow, leaving the rest of the plant to fade in focus.

Interesting thought Steve. Thanks. I'm probably not good enough; so you shoot it & I'll vote for it. See ya. Lynn

I downloaded the image.
I see that the image as presented initially is a lot less vibrant than the downloaded version. The downloaded version I think provides all the "pop" that you need colourwise.

How else to make it better? The image as presented?
I think that cropping halfway between the spiky sticky up bit on top and the top of the pic, and cropping halfway between the bottom most edge of the lowest flower and the bottom of the pic will strengthen the image enormously. (Especially with the "pop" restored)

How else to make it better? In the taking?
The end of the flower stalk on the right side is soft, but the dominant hearts are sharp.
I don't want to make the background sharper because I love how bokeh highlights sharpness in front.
But I do detect here that the plane of the stalk slopes slightly away to the left. If you shift your camera around a bit to the right, and concentrated on keeping the camera and the flower stalk on parallel planes then you can have them all in focus and still use the same aperture.
Another way to isolate the flowers would be to take the image when the flowers are in sun and the background is in shade.
The same can be achieved with flash, but I prefer natural light myself.
I downloaded the image. br I see that the image as... (show quote)

Thanks lighthouse. I'm glad at least one of us is on the ball. Your suggestions are all applicable. I think the most outstanding idea that I must adopt is to crop to non standard sizes. I've been married to standard sizes to send to the lab and my printer for so many years that I don't think any other way. I'm workin on changing that now. The scenic/landscape stuff I love; but it's all a relearning process. Thanks again for some good input. Lynn

About a year and a half ago I posted the color version, and promised a monochrome sometime. I checked the calendar and damned if today isn't "Sometime"!
I recall the day well. I spent close to an hour working the scene...or the clouds spent that time "working me" ...not really sure which it was!
But here 'tis!
C&C welcome.

No downloads or manipulations please.

Dave

Hi Dave. I like the composition; foreground and barn are fine. The clouds bother me. They seem overly harsh, without a hint of "wispy" anywhere. Maybe that's how they really looked. Maybe over ominous or tad over processed.
