I saw a post yesterday about light painting and had forgotten all about this technique. My examples aren't that great but are somewhat unique ( always trying to be different! )

If you have never done this, it is easy to do and each picture has a different light quality. The goal is to "paint" an isolated subject or subjects with a flashlight or other light source, leaving the surrounding items unpainted. You paint as long as the shutter is open which can be anywhere between 1 second or 30 seconds, depending how dark it is and what aperture you use, etc.

A tripod is a must and I used the mirror up function and the self-timer on my camera.

The Gray's Anatomy photo could have used a bit more ambient light on adjacent books however the anatomy book is "painted" pretty well without spilling light over to surrounding books.

(The drumstick photo shows large sticks, not small drums!)

Would love to see some more examples of this technique.

Beautiful - How did you get the light to focus just on Gray's Anatomy?

But I am not sure what "painting with light:" is... a technique?

Painting with light is a technique where you take a picture in complete darkness with no flash or lighting except a flashlight(torch for some) It's a good way to spend a long winter night .

What ISO and camera settings would you use for that?

No set rules that I know. I start with F25-F32 with iso of 250. 30 second(that should give you enough time to paint) I set my camera on tripod ,focus on my subject when light are on switch to manual, shut off lights and start painting with the flashlight.I try to have a lcd flashlight ,as it give a slight tinge to your pic and a pure white one.the longer you stay in one place the more ex-poser you'll get.Try different methods of rate of light. I also have colored cellophane for different tinges. The main thing is play with it and have fun.Never know what you'll get .good luck and good shooting.

Thank you, Tusket. I really appreciate the information. I have played around with this before but was curious as to how you approached it yourself. I can always learn something new. Now I'm inspired to play again after seeing your beautiful pictures. Thanks again! WW

Very beautiful. I work in Tonawanda. I was just at Glen Falls a few months ago - I hadn't been there in many years. Now I know what kind of ND filter to get. Thanks for posting  :P

Some more shots of the rocky Devon coastline. A bit of PP here and there but (hopefully) not too much.

So beautiful and moody

Thank you whitewitch.

You're very welcome. I just got back from the Celtic Festival near Niagara Falls and got to see so many great Scottish dances, bands and food. What a blast. It's the closest I'll get to Scotland for now, anyway... :-P

My thoughts exactly. My neighbor was out about 10 minutes before me. He claims that there was an explosion. In one of my photos there is what appears to be a red speck. It only appears in one photo.

How beautiful! :P

SO beautiful. Can you please tell me what settings you had your camera at to capture the silky look of the falls? Thanks! WW

f/8 1/2 sec. ISO 200

Did you use an ND filter or a polarizer? Thanks again... :D

Yes. I was using a CPL. Pretty much always have it on the lens when I'm doing any outdoor photography.

Thank you for being generous with your information, Lyn. I really do appreciate it. I'm looking forward to trying the falls with a polarizer or ND filter :-P :-P
