What a great way to spend a day. Sitting next to the ocean listening and smelling the wonders of nature. AND with a camera no less!

Graham I cannot get over the great contrast in all of your b&w images. Another well done!

I started to change the color a bit before printing but was interrupted and forgot what I was doing! LOL. It is hell getting old. I have had my prints done by third party printers and they come out fine. I just had some other thoughts that I will try. I am writing them down now so I will not forget. Ha!

Thanks for your suggestion Mike.

As I have stated in my original post, I have done that. It only happens on some pics where the sky is a very deep blue. I am wondering if it could be an "out of gamut" problem. I cannot believe that the blue in these pics is not in the color space though.

I am having problems with my Canon Pro 9500 mkII. Some of my landscapes prints are coming out with a red sky. I thought I had seen some dialog on this subject here on UHH but I did not see anything in the search that I did. Out here in the desert the sky can take on a dark blue that really pleasant. It is not so pleasant when you printer thinks they should be red.

I am using the same profiles that I always use and I ran the clean heads maintenance function but to no avail. This has happened before and I did nothing to fix it because it just went away.

If anyone can help me I know that there is a UHH member that will. I have a chance to sell some of the prints but red skies sort of kills that idea for the minute.

I forgot to add the brand of tripod, I am sorry. It is an Induro. Great product.

I own several tripods, but none of them are real top of the line.
I need some input from the experienced folks on UHH to tell me what to buy. I film Landscape and Wildlife and would like to own a real sturdy, light tripod with a real good head. I realize this is going to cost a little cash, but that's OK.

I can offer you this: I am on SS so my spending money is scarce. I do landscapes. I have AKB 1 AT113. I paid $161 for it on Amazon (from Adorama). The small ball head that came with it was great except that I wanted to do panoramic shots and it is not able to do them well. I bought a Vanguard SBH-300 ball head on ebay. I paid $35 it is new. The seller recieved it as a gift. I could not be happier with my tripod and ball head. They are every thing I could want. Total investment over a 3 month period (it took me awhile to realize the ball head that came with the tripod was not all I wanted) $200.

I shoot with a Nikon D2x. My main lens is a Sigma 289-70mm 2.8 EX. Together they are heavy. Everything works fine.

One last note: If I did not want to shoot panoramas the ball head that came with the tripod was great. It was very easy to get used to and easy to operate. To be honest it worked just fine for landscapes. It is quick to release the ball to move the camera and quick to tighten it up again. It has a lever in lieu of a knob which I liked.

Hello nikonnut, hmm. I do like a touch of grain in some B&W images. I'm guilty of adding it using Silver Efex but I back off the slider to reduce it to give the "feeling" I'm looking for. As a youngster I loved the B&W pictures in the newspapers. They were grainy because the photographers used fast film and the printing process exaggerated this. To me those shadowy images were full of mystery and drama, you often had to look quite hard to see detail. Oddly I do miss those grainy images . Is it just me?, should I see someone about it?

No Graham don't "see" someone about it. LOL. I also remember those newspaper photos and I was amazed to find out that they made them with dots. As a youngster viewing the blow-up of a newspaper photo was very revealing. It also made my understanding of "new" digital photos very easy. It's the same principle with much much more information for each dot.

I do not like to add grain because I am driven to make sharp crisp images. Sometime it is to my detriment because if it is not sharp I discard it. Maybe I should rethink.

Love your images Graham. Thank you for posting them.

I avoid sepia like the plague because it always says "trying to make it look old" The monochrome version has a slight copper toning applied which I often use, it warms and enriches the blacks.

Hi Graham, I agree with you. I also do not understand why adding "grain" is all the rage. Years ago we went to special lengths to try to eliminate grain and now there are programs to add it. I was going to ask if that was a rollup he had in his lip but others noticed it as well. Great photo as always Graham. Yours are a treasure to view.

I've seen that before and it always stirs feelings in my heart. It is truly a shame how the VN Vets were treated. May it NEVER happen again.

I came back in Nov. 1964. I was in the 82nd Airborne. We stopped at Oakland Army Terminal. I was so happy to be back home in the US. All I had to wear was my Army uniform. I had garbage thrown at me for being a soldier. I could not believe what was happening in my own country. The good news is I was able to spend the remaining part of my enlistment in Fort Ord, California. If you have ever been to the Monterey Peninsula you know what a great time that was. I soon forgot about VN and Oakland.

Thanks for the history lesson and the pics. I read a lot about English history when I lived in Europe. There are so many places that are just rich with history.
