the flower picture you posted is very pretty. The petals remind me of ribbon candy because they are so shiny.

My favorite picture is number 2. It draws me in and I especially like it vertical. I agree, would love to see it bigger. Hope you have some more "slow day" photos.

I see some people are wondering about the "bashing" so I will post a link to the thread in which Photo Guy thinks he was bashed, before members comment on the "negative" people on UHH, maybe looking at the thread in question would be a great idea.

Sadly, this thread has made me question if spending my time here is even worth it. If I am such a negative person and my comments should be ignored, then I will be spending my time on other forums where I will learn how to take my photography to a new level and others welcome my feedback.

thank you.

Please MWAC--do not let this chase you from this forum. Your advice and comments have helped me improve my photography already. Especially do not leave because someone feels your rather benign comments are bashing.

I tried to address this earlier in a comment I made about people commenting on the bashers and haters. Before you jump to someone's aid due to being "bashed" make sure it is warranted.

I read every thread you post and have even taken notes from some of your comments. Know for this one poster that doesn't seem to like your comments, there is at least one poster (me) that is learning from you.

This is just my personal opinion but I do think a different background might evoke your message a little better. That background, while beautiful, is very intense. I was thinking of something along the lines of a blue sky with fluffy clouds, or a tranquil ocean.
You might also think of the placement of the couple--instead of in the exact middle perhaps off to the side and raised above the line of clouds so your eye focuses on them instead of the background. Hope this made sense!

When it comes to critique, I would rather have a negative but constructive comment, than a "good capture" comment. First, I can learn from negative feedback, but not the other. I can get that from F and F. I have my pet peeves about photography rules; I see them broken all the time, and usually it is because no one notices things like tilting horizons. (#1 peeve) I have quit commenting on those. I also don't remember any "bashing". I see photos all the time here that do nothing for me, but I also see those same photos praised. If anything, I think we need more critical observations on work than we do praise.

I have read everyone of Photo Guys threads as I often do with most posts. Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands. I have yet to see anyone bash or be mean to him.

Those people that are telling him to ignore the "bashers" "haters" and "venom filled" posters, don't know what they are talking about. There were two (2) posters that said a couple of his photographs were not interesting from an emergency viewpoint. That is not hateful mean or bashing.

Try having a poster tell you that you will ruin an event you are photographing and to "wipe the snot off your (my) chin." That is mean and bashing.

You had suggested using an umbrella in the earlier thread. I should have tried it out before the event because now I am going to get one anyway!

The soft box was a 2'x3' and tipped vertical and about 6 feet away? i am going to look into getting at least one umbrella.

Not bad for first time out!
I assume the light was high as it could go. Umbrella on the right side?
One thing that might have helped, and I'm not sure if it was possible, would have been to open up the aperture and or move them away from the background more to throw it out of focus. Hard to shoot dark suit on a black background w/o using some sort of rim light on the person or light on the background. All in all, good job. Bet the families were tickeled!

I had the one soft box next to the camera tipped down. On picture right I had another soft box up as high as I could pointed at the background. On the right was a homemade reflector. I had them pulled out about 4 feet from the background. That was about all the room I had. And you were right, the families liked them a lot.

oh man it's your BIL, just don't look at his "area" when he comes over for sunday lunch. ;) Next time have him sit so both legs are together and have his daughter sit on his lap. Or you could her sit and him standing slightly behind her with his hands resting more on her sholders in a fatherly/protective way.

I tend to lean more toward warm tones, so I try to keep my Yellow tones 10 points highter than my Magenta and my Cyan lower than 1/3 to 1/4 of my Magenta (ya there is math involved) . What editing software are you using? When you do your post work are you checking CYMK numbers for correct skin tones?

Brunch will never be the same!

I use Lightroom and PSE 10 and I don't check for skin tones. Are there some numbers I should be paying attention to? Thanks for the hint on the warmer tones because I really like what you do in your photos.

Thanks for the feedback MWAC. I didn't spit anything on the computer but I did chock on my cracker. What makes it worse is in #1--he is my brother-in-law!. But you are right--I will look. Do you have any suggestions for the seating/standing pose?

I have problems with that whole warm/cool thing. I'm never sure which way to take it and when anything (exposure etc) is too much. Is there a rule of thumb I could follow?

These are only two pictures that I took a little over a week ago out of about 125. They are the formal portraits and the first I have ever done. There were a lot of people on this forum that gave me hints and advice in order to help me succeed. So now I am asking, did I succeed?

I do have permission to post these pictures and I know that the butterflies in the background look like they are growing out of heads. It was the committees choice of background so I had to go with it.

Please let me know what you think of the exposure and lighting. I learn from the feedback.

I have been reading your threads and I'm a little puzzled. I have not seen anyone bashing your pictures or having a problem. there was one thread that some felt the pictures were quite ordinary and did not represent what your FD does. That is having an opinion and not bashing.

Most of your threads where you actually post pictures have been very positively accepted. If you real the full threads of others you will find that sometimes someone says "doesn't do it for me" or "not my thing." They aren't bashing the poster--just expressing a thought. Not everyone is going to like everything you do but that is okay because you are happy with them.

I don't know a lot about black and white but I have to tell you that when I scrolled down to the eyes, the image literally made me catch my breath. It seemed as if in that moment those beautiful eyes spoke volumes to me.

I love B&W. Done well, it can be beautiful. Done poorly is is just drab. I read a quote once - wish I knew who to attribute it to, "When you photograph in color, you see their clothes, when you photograph in black and white you see their soul."
quote=maxamillion I don't know a lot about black ... (show quote)

I like the quote. I may start experimenting with a little more black and white. I have actually only done it once though my son does it quite often because he prefers it. Perhaps the quote will be the catalyst for some of my own black and white work.
