Oh, so true. Give it 6 to 8 months; - by that time others will have discovered any bugs/problems! Plus IF the product is good you can then buy it at significantly less than launch price, :-)
Hi bcheary, - "what am I doing out here in the middle of the South Atlantic?" - Nothing much at the moment:
It's supposed to be nearly the end of our Winter but there IS a reason we islanders refer to it as "Scruffy August"; - it's just rain/mist, fog, blustery - and often still quite cold in the evenings. The weather is not nasty enough to provide opportunities for "stormy weather" photographs though - so I'm hoping for some improvement before my leave ends so that I can get out there with my Nikon D7100; - had that 3 weeks ago and well pleased with it.
(it's a refurbished item with 18-140mm Nikkor lens - from B & H Photo Video). Been doing work inside the house: redecorating, fitting up cabinets & lacquering them, etc. I want to get out to Prosperous Bay - to the airport site as well when the weather improves, - to get some photos of the work/progress there. The airport is due to open in early 2016. (Until then access to the island has been by sea only).
Also our phone. TV & Internet provider hoped to have a cellular network up & running by the end of this year, but have suffered a set-back, . . . so are now saying it will likely be launched in May/June 2015. We take it all in our stride because it's a beautiful island - and it's home.
bcheary: You have absolutely nailed it as regards seeing if others would get the same tolerance these people seem to demand. Would love to see/know of an actual set-up/situation even just a bit like your post! Had a good rollicking laugh reading it.
Regards,
Danny.
Hi Andy, I have a Nikon D5100 and I bought the cheaper one of the 2 Sigma 10-20mm Lenses. Both the Sigma 10-20mm Lenses have excellent reviews, - the dearer one beating Nikon's 10-24mm for performance and sporting a constant aperture of (I think) f3.5 throughout it's zoom range. Sigma also does a wide angle lens that starts from 8mm, - this would give a 12mm equivalent on our APSC (DX) sized sensors in 35mm (Full Frame) terms; - pretty wide!
I'm really pleased with the performance of my Sigma 10-20mm; - I find it great for landscape photography - and for photographing building interiors.
Regards, Danny.
Hi, you will also find that B & H Photo Video and Adorama both sell Refurbished DSLRs; - mainly Canon and Nikon stuff. I've just had my refurbished Nikon D7100 with 18-140mm Lens from B&H; - so clean it looks like new - and works perfectly. Stock changes all the time though, so if you don't at first see the camera you want keep checking every week or so.
I take it you don't have/don't want a DSLR???
If you have a DSLR - even if it's an older/cheaper model with APSC sized sensor then stick a 10 - 20mm lens on it.
I find my Sigma 10-20mm lens on my Nikon D5100 DSLR great for taking interior shots.
Regards, Danny J.
Hi, yes - definitely step-up. I would suggest going around 10mm bigger than the diameter of your largest lens thread - so go for at least 67mm step-up rings and a 67mm diameter CPL filter. It avoids vignetting.
Ha ha ha, . . . . sometimes you just gotta have a good laugh, - even when it's the truth!
Hi, yes I would personally recommend Transcend SDHC Cards. Advise you get the Transcend Ultimate ones - with a fast read/write speed. Sandisk's Extreme SDHC Cards also come highly recommended. . . . BUT I must admit I have ALWAYS avoided Lexar Cards of any kind since having trouble with that brand some years ago.
Hi Rodney1234
nothing wrong with a "Nifty 50" Lens, - but as someone else pointed out it's only 50mm on a full-frame camera.
I have a Nikon 50mm f1.8 Lens which I use on my D5100 - which is of course a DX (APSC) sized sensor, - so working on a multiplier of 1.5x, this gives an equivalent of 75mm focal length when used on my camera. For me it's a great portrait lens for the price.
Absolutely brilliant!!! . . . and sounding too close to the truth, perhaps.
Yes, cant wait, - but of course I must.
Would you believe I actually have to ask a (very good)
photographer friend here on St. Helena to order the camera in his name - because he has resided in the UK a while & has a credit card. Once he gets his bank statement I make a transfer of funds from my account to his at our local bank. (Most of us living in St. Helena Island [in the South Atlantic] do NOT have credit cards).
My friend then has it delivered to an address on Ascension Island's US Base there - to another mutual friend who works there. That friend then sends the goods out to me onboard the ship that I work on when the ship calls at Ascension.
. . . so quite a bit of planning & teamwork needed to acquire the goods.
Intending to keep the D5100 for a while longer, - until I decide to try & sell it tp upgrade to either the D5200 or the D5300: (I like having a DSLR with the Vari-Angle screen) . . . but cant decide WHICH one of the 2 to go for: - I like lots about the latest D5300 - except is seems to be noisier at high ISOs than the D5200.
. . . In the meantime once I have my mitts on the D7100 I know my dear lady wife would love to get more "hands-on" time with my D5100, as she only has a Sony bridge camera at present.
Hi Sharpshooter,
- I'm guilty I have to admit: In the 22 months that I've had my Nikon D5100 I have been spending here & there on a few extras, sourcing them from UK, Capetown & the US: (adorama & B & H Photo Video).
At the time I acquired the 5100 I bought it as the body plus Sigma 18 - 250mm DC OS HSM Lens. I then added a Lowepro 190Aw shoulder bag, 2 of Nissin Di622 Mk2 Flash Guns, a Nikon 50mm f 1.8 lens, then a Sigma 10 - 20mm Lens, Nikon remote shutter release cable, plus some P sized square filters, . . . so the Lowepro 190 bag is quite full. . . . Thinking I might sell the D5100 in 8 months to a year - but cant decide if to go for the D5200 or the D5300 as, from the reviews it appears the D5300 is actually noisier at high ISOs. - Any advice here? I still want 1 of my DSLR's to have the Vari-angle screen, - ( which is the ONLY omission I'm not happy with Nikon about as regards the D7100).
Hi dear UHH guys & gals. I've previously read posts on UHH about members "suffering" from GAS - and had to smile when reading them. Seems like I've also been bitten by the bug. Less than 2 weeks ago I sold my Nikon D3200 to my daughter as she wanted to upgrade a bit (from her D3000); - I'd only had it for 7 months! . . . . so just this last week have ordered a Nikon D7100 with 18 - 140mm Lens from B & H Photo Video. - Cant wait to get my hands on it. (Will STILL keep my D5100 though; - have had that one for 22 months).
