Thanks for the responses. Bob, Dasheene is the restaurant at our resort so I am looking forward to that. Also it seems most of the suggestions are right in that area of the island so I lucked out.
Hopefully I will come back with several shots worth sharing.

I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Next month my wife and I will be going to St Lucia for a week. The resort we are staying at is at the Pitons so I have that covered. Are there any other "must photograph" places I need to know about?

All input appreciated

My wife and I went to St. Lucia in 2002. I recommend a visit to the Botanical Mineral Baths and Waterfall. Also we had dinner at Dasheene and watched the setting sun. That was a wonderful evening. You will have fun.

Lots of good information here, thanks. I am always surprised that comparison weight and shutter lag aren't prominent because I feel those specs are important.

For your shots? A 24MP Nikon D3300 or 18MP Canon T5i would both give you perfectly satisfactory results.

Thanks again Shooter. I used to use Nikons but now have a Canon 7D. I thought that either the 7DMark2 or the Nikon D750 would be right for me although both cameras are more than I need. Which would you recommend? Thank you for your time.

Comparing any crop sensor camera to any full frame camera is always going to be a win for the full frame. The Canon wins as far as frame rate due to its dual Digic 6 processors, but fails miserably in any other direct comparison made between them, as expected.
These two cameras were never intended to be compared head to head as they are built to serve entirely different photographic needs.

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. I shoot mostly grandchildren, general scenic and travel. What would you recommend? Thank again, in advance.

The Canon 50MP cameras could never rate as high as the Nikon 36MP bodies for the simple reason that Canon chose NOT to actually develop anything new, but to simply take the tiny pixels of the 70D sensor and place them on a full frame sensor. The low light capability can not exceed the 70D because of the pixel size, thats simple physics. No crop sensor camera outperforms ANY full frame camera for the simple fact that the full frames have larger pixels and also have more free space between those pixels. No mystery here, but the Canon fanboys will unavoidably all be out in force complaining about how prejudiced DXO is against Canon, they do the same for each and every Canon release because of the rankings the sensors received. Especially the wanna-be fauxtographer/politician from California that always screams the loudest.

Thanks Shooter, your comments are always most informative. Except for the last line. Would I be too much of a trouble maker to ask what you think is a better camera, the Canon 7Dmark 2 or the Nikon D750? Regardless of your answer I always follow your remarks with interest.

I'm not all that certain that you were there as you don't appear to know how to spell Sydney. After all the publicity that the Sydney Olympics received,I would imagine that most people at least know how to spell its name.

Why so snarky? The fact is that no cameras are allowed on the bridge. Your remark is totally uncalled for.

Does it make a difference if I get a lens that is f2.8 or larger as compared to an f4 since now with digital the graininess is not as prevalent as it was with during the film days. Or can I get the cheaper f4 lens and adjust the ISO to compensate? It is only one stop. During film that made a big difference but with digital it seems to not be so dramatic.

That's exactly what I thought until this past weekend. I went to my grandson's graduation, set aperture and shutter to manual and let my ISO float (automatic). The results were not great. Based on my experience i suggest the largest lens you can afford. Good luck.

Bob,

It would be my pleasure to meet you and show you the parts of B&H that customers don't get to see. This takes about 1-1.5 hours (leave yourself additional time to shop). Next week might be a little tight as our offices (me) are closed on 1/1. Therefore the following week would work best for me. You can PM me here or at hwaldner@bhphoto.com

Looking forward to meeting you.

HERSHEL

Thanks very much Hershel. I will try to get into the city either at the middle of January or in March. I look forward to meeting with you. Best regards, Bob

Thanks for the good wishes Hershel. I live in Westchester but only buy in person. I drive into the city occasionally. Are you available to meet during the week or do you make special appointments to meet people from the UHH? I might drive in to the city and would like to meet you. You folks do a terrific job and have great customer relations. Keep up the great work.

I use snapsort and also the comparison feature of dpreview, but only for features. I never bother with the score that snapsort gives. What's it based on? A different scoring system could result in a different score.

Seeing two cameras compared side-by-side can point up differences that are important to one potential buyer but not to another.

As for other reviews, if a reviewer says he like the feel of one camera more another, that's irrelevant to me. I like factual comparisons.

Matt Granger used to be called "That Nikon Guy," but he dropped that title. He does lots of good reviews on youTube.

Thanks Jerry, I will visit some other sites and take my time before giving in to my GAS. Also, I will take a trip to Manhattan and get a feel for the cameras.

Thanks to all of you for the quick responses. That helps me put these reviews in perspective. I read this site daily and admire the broad knowledge and advice given by most of you. Three cheers for the UHH!
