Wow. What a difference... the colors... but also the eye contact makes all the difference. Nice job.

Thank you..I tend to be very persistent..I knew I didn't like the outcome of yesterdays pictures so I put her back in the dress today and changed some things and was happier with what I got. Thankfully I babysit the little munchkin everyday and had the opportunity to have a do-over...Thanks again!

A lot of good suggestions here... but some take planning... changing b.g., wardrobe and lighting. You should think about them all and adjust accordingly... but sometimes you can't. So in a situation where you have no control and you have a minute to take a shot... here are a couple of tips. Cant the camera... angle it a little to make the shot not quite so straight on. Also, while she's a sweet as she can be, you need to capture a moment... she seems in the shot rather lethargic. There's another shot you posted where she has an expression on her face and it's a MUCH better shot. More story. Don't be afraid to wait for it. My 2.

Thanks Jaime..Thank you for the advice..unfortunately...the wardrobe on this shot was not my choice...it was the choice of the baby's mother. Personally, I think the bows need to go..LOL anyway..I did the re-shoot today...and this is what I got...

OK..just want to start by saying..I don't think I like this..I took about 30 pics of my neice today and when I loaded them to the computer..this is what I saw. I have not photoshopped at all...since I have yet to find a photoshop that I like. Please give me your honest opinion of the picture...I have her outfit here and I take care of her everyday..I feel a re-shoot coming. Any suggestions to make this better are sooo welcome. Thank you!

Hi Bonnie,

Really don't see much wrong with this 'straight' shot except the yellow ribbons distract from a cute baby. It might not win any prizes, but it's a good shot--I'm new here but have used a camera many years. I use Picasa, mainly because it's free and does about all I can do to improve pics. Don

Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I did do a re-shoot today. it's posted under 2nd attempt..I think it came out much better. I too use Picasa and also Lightroom but I do like to try to get the picture I want, for the most part, without photoshop.

the use of the red background eliminated the exposure problems from yesterday and added a rosy glow to her skin tones. she seems more lively and happier today also. shes a lovelyy little girl and these photos are much better. like them alot. I also salute your courage in taceling a difficult subject portriture is probably the hardest area in photography to master.

Thank you Sinatraman..Portraiture is my passion..I love photographing people and animals. Landscapes and still life just don't interest me as much..I have tried but always end up disregarding the photos. Thank you again for your comments..I am always trying to improve and as you see, I try to take everybodys advice and work with it.

Good suggestions - all. Good pics but, yes, a bit dark. Post=processing might fix. Are you shooting RAW?

To get a good smile for this age tyke, I use a small stuffed, blue bear or their fav soft toy in my left hand, remote trigger in my right. I stand to left of the baby and playfully shake the bear in his/her face tickling just a little until he/she starts to laugh and reach for the bear. I then as fast as possible move out of the shot and fire the shutter making sure I am not masking any important light source. If necessary to avoid masking lighting, I move to the other side and do the same thing. Sometimes I have to "warm up" the baby a bit before hand to get the smile, laugh I am looking for.
Good suggestions - all. Good pics but, yes, a bit ... (show quote)

Thank you for the advice. Since I am just starting out..the only equipment I have is my Nikon D5000 camera and a few lenses. I am hoping to get more add ons as I go. This little princess is my 4 month old neice..and at times a not so cooperative model.. :-) . I am all alone here with her and just try to prop her up and see what I can get. I love all the tips and advice I receive here in this forum..it is very much appreciated, especially since friends and family are beginning to request that I take their family photos..I am a bit nervous about taking that on so again..all the tips and advice I can get is Very Welcome!

you might try not standing up when you take the pic, get down on your knees or even lay on the floor

Thanks for the advice..I was actually kneeling down when I took these, she was on the couch. I will re- take these tomorrow with all the advice and see what I come up with.

This was one I made black and white...a little better, I think

One I took of her yesterday..What do you think??

You cannot take a bad picture of a baby..some better then others ..so that said..I think you can do better with some positioning..she is adorable! Get to work and show us more!

Well thankfully I babysit this little munchkin every day and have this outfit here. Her mom wants pictures in this outfit before she outgrows it. So I will be re-doing this photoshoot tomorrow...I will look at positioning...still unsure of what a good background color would be for this dress, any suggestions?

a white or light colored background will cause your camera meter to over expose . your meter will try to make everything come out in a gray 18% tone. get a gray card or take a meter reading from the baby (set spot metering) use exposure lock and re compose your photo and shoot. or you can use exposure compensation. The same result in the opposite direction occurs when trying to shoot in a black background, you wind up underexposed. you are trying to master a difficult subject. your compisition is good. may i suggest the book "understanding exposure" by bryan peterson (available at amazon.com new and used) in plain english and with lots of awesome photos he will explain everything you need to know to get not only a correct exposure but also the most creative exposure. i highly recomend his work.

Thanks Sinatraman...I will definitely look into the book!

can you sit her up in a bumble chair..or prop her on pillows etc..take a look at some sites on web..get some posing ideas. Laying her down is not flattering ..and makes image very one dimensional or flat.

So they must be worse than I thought..she wasn't laying down..But thanks for the suggestions..
