They look a little underexposed to me on this montior (I'm at work, this monitor sucks ;) ). You have catch lights in the second one, so Ya!

Where are you taking these? I would suggest moving infront of a window, open up the curtains/blinds and place her at about a 45 degree angle from the window. The natural light will give you some nice shadows resulting in some nice details. You'll still get some great catch lights and she should have a nice colour to her skin.

These are great images, she's very pretty, catch lights and she's looking at the camera and in focus... Keep up the good work. :)

Good suggestions - all. Good pics but, yes, a bit dark. Post=processing might fix. Are you shooting RAW?

To get a good smile for this age tyke, I use a small stuffed, blue bear or their fav soft toy in my left hand, remote trigger in my right. I stand to left of the baby and playfully shake the bear in his/her face tickling just a little until he/she starts to laugh and reach for the bear. I then as fast as possible move out of the shot and fire the shutter making sure I am not masking any important light source. If necessary to avoid masking lighting, I move to the other side and do the same thing. Sometimes I have to "warm up" the baby a bit before hand to get the smile, laugh I am looking for.

Thank you for the advice. Since I am just starting out..the only equipment I have is my Nikon D5000 camera and a few lenses. I am hoping to get more add ons as I go. This little princess is my 4 month old neice..and at times a not so cooperative model.. :-) . I am all alone here with her and just try to prop her up and see what I can get. I love all the tips and advice I receive here in this forum..it is very much appreciated, especially since friends and family are beginning to request that I take their family photos..I am a bit nervous about taking that on so again..all the tips and advice I can get is Very Welcome!

the use of the red background eliminated the exposure problems from yesterday and added a rosy glow to her skin tones. she seems more lively and happier today also. shes a lovelyy little girl and these photos are much better. like them alot. I also salute your courage in taceling a difficult subject portriture is probably the hardest area in photography to master.

Thank you Sinatraman..Portraiture is my passion..I love photographing people and animals. Landscapes and still life just don't interest me as much..I have tried but always end up disregarding the photos. Thank you again for your comments..I am always trying to improve and as you see, I try to take everybodys advice and work with it.
