http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-4224-1.html If you copy and paste that, you can see the other post(s). I should have checked on the LCD by zooming. Why didn't I think of that. I guess I just thought one of the three would be sharp. It's probably sharp enough for an 8x10, but I bet they will want it larger than that. It's hard to show on here. If they allow me a reshoot, I believe I'll set the camera on f10, ISO of 200 (depending on the day), and hopefully the shutter speed will be faster. Plus I'll shut off the image stabilizer since I'm using the tripod. Oh, and I'll use the fixed 50mm lens. What do you think?

i think there's no need to use the 50mm unless you actuallywant to... the 24-105 is VERY sharp at mid-range focal lengths, especially if it's stopped down to f/8 or so. you shouldn't need to go any smaller than that to get ample DOF. (FYI, if you set the lens at 50mm and f/8, at a distance of about 20 feet, you'll have a total acceptable DOF of 16 feet - 5 feet in front, and 11 feet behind - so your blur problem isn't a DOF thing.) if you're using the tripod, turn off the IS and if you don't have a remote shutter release, use the camera's internal self-timer. that will eliminate any possibility of camera movement from you touching the camera to press the shutter.

IS off or on shouldn't be a problem with a canon lens on a tripod, but the low shutter speed could have allowed movement when pressin' da button. The 2 sec timer usage is a good idea for eliminating that.

It's just the frames, mind ya; ya still need the lenses.

Awwww shucks, beacher...I was going to recommend the same website. I have one of these hoods on order. Do you have one? If so, how do you like it? One thing I'll need to remember is to take an older pair of glasses so the good ones don't get boogered up from looking through the viewfinder!

I think ya missed my point. I was referring to the flip up glasses frame that hoodman sells. That is why I said "I do and don't wear my glasses". I flip one of the lenses up out of the way when I look thru the viewfinder  ! Take another look at the site, look at the photoframes.

Hello Good People,
I've been taking pictures of stuff for many years but lack the "professional" edge. About 90% of the shots are of various buildings & conditions I look for during inspections. I try to take close-ups so I can get as much detail as posible but lighting isnt always handy.
The remaining 10% is mostly the natural World, critters & such.
Now I'm getting near the time to replace an aging Canon Powershot S2 IS & would really appreciate any suggestions.

If ya want to keep in the same vein, ck out the canon sx30 is, or the new sx40 is. 1/2 again as much zoom, near same size, new digic IV processor.

Why it's just south of North Mehoopany, of course! Southwest of Proctor and Gambles Paper Products, everyone knows that! Right? Right? I mean, like I'm right, yeah, sure, I'm right... aren't I? Aw shucks... did it again, huh? rats...

I have to disagree with calling these bullseyes -

Explain why these are not bullseyes. Maybe I am not getting the definition of a bullseye photo. Whew so much to learn and only a life time to do it. :-D

In Totem Pole, draw a line from the top left corner (Where my eye first came into the frame) to the bottom right corner (Right through the statue's right eye - center of interest), then go from the middle of that line to the upper right corner - right through the left eye - bingo - Golden Triangles ! In the sailor's knot, just the opposite - the line leads from upper right to lower left, then from the center of that up to the upper left - through arms of the knot - another good pic! The clam is like the first - the eye goes into the space between the top and bottom halves of the shell from the left, and circles in a swirl all the way back to the beginning! Better than 3-points, better than triangles!

NOT from the middle of the 1st line; it needs to be perpendicular to the 1st line and drawn to either unused corner. That is your golden triangle  ! And if you have a major feature in at least 2 of those triangles, you're on your way to a good composition (if ya follow the golden triangle rule :) !).

I am looking for a new camera in the 300.00 dollar range . I am interested in a Panasonic DMC-FZ40K and am looking for reviews and where to buy

Well, first thing to do is google "Panasonic DMC-FZ40K reviews" and see what ya get. dpreviews.com may prove useful. Also try "best $300 digital camera". It will get ya a number of sources to ck out. See what fits your needs, then ck back here to see if anyone has had any experience with your selection(s).

I am looking to purchase a point & shoot camera that basicly no lag time and a decent amount of zoom.
I was using my friends Canon xTi for a couple of months and find it to heavy to carry around for long periods.
Is there any cameras you guys & gals can recommend.
I know that the DSLR cameras basicly have no lag time.

If you're looking at p&s due to weight issues, but really prefer the advantages of dslr cameras, give some thought to the 4/3's or micro 4/3 cameras or the ilc's that have recently come out. You can have the advantages (or nearly have) of the larger sensors and variety of lenses without the weight issues. Just ask fivedawgz :-D !

Gidday beacher,
How do you do that greyed out bit with your photographic gear? I do a lot of macro but don't have IS. How do you find it?
Thanks for the comment.

Back atcha, beephoto! Don't know what ya mean... Unless ya talking about the grayed out signature area where I listed my gear. Check "My Profile" up at the top of the page.

I want to take more B&W and I was wondering how a ND filter would affect B&W. Does a ND filter take away from high contrast?

Read the info on the following site, should clear up your questions fairly well...

jpegs are 8 bit images. Raw files are 12-14 bit images. Raw files can be converted to jpegs, but not the other way around -- you can take info away, but you can't make it up out thin air. Moreover, you can't save a ps'ed file as raw, only as psd, tiff, jpeg, or dng (I think). Jpegs are lossless files, which means when you compress it to save space, you can suffer a loss of information. More so once you manipulate it and save it. The raw files your camera kicks out don't suffer that fate. But they are much, much bigger (maybe 3-4 times the size of jpegs).

At someone's wedding, there were two cameras - a cameraman on the floor, then on a tall pole in between some seats was another camera, but above that which was connected to the camera about a foot away, was a white (looked like cloth) screen approx. 2 ft X 2 ft. I asked what that was and someone said it was a defuser, if I am saying that right. What's it made of? I'm sure it defuses the light, but can they be made or is it a 'bought' item only?

ck b&h photo and adorama, both good sources. But also ck the auto parts section at Walmart (or wherever) for sun shades for the windshield -- cheap, cheap, cheap!

I am not looking for "negitive mean nasty responses" and I am not trying to "foster more bitterness and h**e". I only tried to dissuade fivedawgz from leaving the forum, as I enjoy her input. If you perceived any such comments in my post, you ranging very far afield... I only questioned your slightly harsh response The only "mean nasty responses" and "bitterness and h**e" seem to be coming from professed liberals or democrats. All bobmielke did was ask silly question.
