Another challenge is this is not a static picture so you need to set your camera before the shot. Different wings have different colors and many of them brightly colored and of course you want to preserve the colors.

When you get caught outside in a bright summer sunny day and the light is bright and extreme what is your best remedy to handle the harsh light? This needs to be handled in both the camera and in post processing. Here is an example of the typical unprocessed photo I'm talking about. I typically underexpose and photoshop the devil out of it. I obviously have more F-stops of light then the camera can handle. I am shooting with a D7100. I am anxious to hear what my fellow hogs think.

I like to think of them as separate items. Although they can be used similarly (both for steadying the camera) I normally will pick one or the other when I head out the door. Each one has it's own set of advantages ie weight, stability factor, ease of carrying. Some places won't allow a tripod where they will a monopod. Personally I see a need for both. From an expense stand point it is probably one of the cheapest pieces of photographic equipment you will ever purchase and the results can be profound. Also, if you start with a decent one you won't have to upgrade every couple of years.......

I prefer Photoshop to LightRoom. I use CC. I removed LR from my computer. I think you can get overwhelmed with PP software. My other choice is On1 Photo10 out of Portland, OR.
Good Shooting,
Thanks for all the replies... Lots of good info.

The ultra light is generally wide open.

Appreciate all the great advise. Believe me I am taking notes.

Hoping to shoot at 1/1000. The D7100 is extremely good at shooting at a elevated ISO.

Did you shoot with the VR on?

Great input everyone. Appreciate the suggestions.....

In July I will be on the Big Island (Hawaii). I am planning on a flight in a Ultra Lite around parts of the island and want to take only one lens on the flight. I am shooting with a D7100. I have the trilogy set. I am considering the 24 to 70. It would be that or the 70 to 200. We will be doing most of out flying between 1500 feet above the surface and lower. It's a one time shot. My other consideration is the time of day. Early in the AM or the evening. Any thoughts?
