In July I will be on the Big Island (Hawaii). I am planning on a flight in a Ultra Lite around parts of the island and want to take only one lens on the flight. I am shooting with a D7100. I have the trilogy set. I am considering the 24 to 70. It would be that or the 70 to 200. We will be doing most of out flying between 1500 feet above the surface and lower. It's a one time shot. My other consideration is the time of day. Early in the AM or the evening. Any thoughts?

Good shooting

I took a doors off private charter flight on Kauai. I used my D7000 with my Nikkor 18-200 VR ll. Most shots 24 - 135.
Captured some awesome shots.
Hope this helps

Those are two great lenses. At 1500 feet I would use the 70-200, but you have to be grounded later. Then it would be 24-70mm time. Only one choice of a lens, the 70-200mm. You won't get as wide an angle as the 24-7Omm. You decide the most important to you. You really need a Nikon 28-300mm FX lens.

At 1500 feet and lower, I can't help but think you need something wider than 24mm ! I am thinking 17-70 Sigma or 12-28mm Tokina or Nikon 16-85. I think the atmosphere will be cleaner in the AM.

VR might help. Yet consider the potential for shaking to reach your gear while in flight. You may wish to consider shooting at a fast shutter speed, 1/250 sec or faster.

Hoping to shoot at 1/1000. The D7100 is extremely good at shooting at a elevated ISO.

I vote for the 70-200 because the 24-70 will make everything look like an ant hill.
Then when you crop, it will then become a fuzzy lazy ant hill.
Id say turn off the VR because it may magnify the vibration from the plane if you shoot at low shutter.

No need for such heavy and awkward equipment. When traveling on vacation take one lite camera, like the Sony DSC-HX400V. It has a 24-1200mm Carl Zeiss T* lens, yes, then same lens company that makes the glass for Hasselblad. Tilt screen, your D7100 does not have that, you can view through the finder or use the rear screen, takes wonderful fill flash like a pro. Why do folks worry about carrying around heavy equipment when on VACATION. Travel lite, travel right and enjoy yourself.

I love the Big Island! See what morning and evening lighting is like a few days before the flight. You will also want to consider the vog from Kilauea. As for the lens, I would avoid anything over 70mm, since you'll be in an ultralight, not an ultrasmooth.

VR is pretty marginal to useless at faster shutter speeds than 1/focal length...

if you are taking a zoom lens, then the 24-70mm should be fine. you are not spending the entire trip in an aeroplane, so what you take on the ground will be more important than what you get up in the air.

Find a very large area and measure off 1500'. Shoot both lenses and see for sure what differences you have. I found the 70-200 was perfect for that altitude. Evening will bring thermals that may cause you to bounce a little. Being airborne at sunrise is kind of exhilarating. Have maximum fun!
