I have a D850 and 750...do yourself a really big favor, check out Steve Perry's YouTube page and his own WebPage. He has an excellent book on the focusing system of Nikon cameras including the 850. It is worth every penny spent on the book.

His YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@backcountrygallery

His Nikon Focus book - https://bcgwebstore.com/product/secrets-to-the-nikon-autofocus-system/

Excellent. I just started one thing and learned something that after years and hundreds of thousands of photos on Nikon bodies I didn't know. Thanks! Ordering his book tonight. :)

Just got a used D850 and am looking at the Face Detection function. I prefer to use back button focus so have the camera set up that way now. I have also set the camera to Face Detection On, and AF-C mode and auto. I have two questions. 1) Is 3D tracking better than AF-C? I will mostly use this camera for weddings so tracking people's faces. 2) Once I get focus lock from the back button, do I take my thumb off that button? Will it keep tracking the face I focused on? Or do I keep my thumb down on the back button?

Someone online was driving a relative's car, and the battery went completely dead. He couldn't close the windows or lock the car, so he had to stay with it. He called AAA, and the guy said the battery was beyond help, so he bought a new one. I had never thought about a dead battery preventing the windows to close or the doors to lock.

I carry one of those little ni-cad battery jumpers in my car.

Hey Jerry. I see you live in the Catskills. One of my favorite events happened to me in a snow storm in the 1970's. I was trying to get from a resort in South Fallsburg to one outside Livingston Manor. My 1972 Chevy Impala was one of the all time worst designs for snow covered roads. The 20 minute drive took 2 hours and finally, on the way out of Livingston Manor, I lost traction climbing a big hill. Kept trying to work the car and nothing would work until the battery died - in blizzard conditions. Not 5 minutes passed before a guy in a white Ford Bronco, a literal hero on a white horse, stopped, wrapped a chain around the front bumper, hauled me up the to the top of the hill, then pulled a truck battery and cables out of the back and jump started me, and drove off. I felt like I'd just seen the real Lone Ranger.

Probably not those but I thought we were talking about photos, not docs. Docs don't take up a lot of space. For those you can use any free service like One Drive or Google Drive. It's when you add photos to those services that you use so much space it ends up costing money. If you want to be able to put big picture files without compression and you are already a Prime member then Amazon Photos is the best deal in town.

Amazon photos is fine for photos but you really should have a system for storage of everything, not just photos. And I don’t think Amazon photos stores raw format files.

If you’re only concerned with sharing it’s a solution.

Amazon stores RAW and does not compress files at all. It's main weakness is the search function. I wish we could create storage trees like computer file systems. But you can definitely store everything.

the best and 2 gigs free..... for each time you use it. "FREE" A NO BRAINER.

my friends and I use this all the time... even companies we work with. Perfect.

I confirm that this works very well, but it's not a storage solution. Amazon photos gives unlimited storage for Prime members at no additional charge.

I use One Drive. (5GB free account)
I put the images there in a folder, get a link that can be sent to people for them to view.
I remove them after X amount of time has passed.

5 GB? Is anything that small? My smallest SD card is 32

Could that possibly account for the difference?

Maybe. But you know the way those Nikon AF sensor points work? Some are horizontal and some are vertical. Those straight lines on the edge are both vertical on the side and horizontal on the top and bottom of the image. Might be worth seeing if the layout of the focus points matches the location of the lines. Since the D600 has fewer of them, that might explain why the lines don't appear in the d600 image

Same sensor-
Do both cameras use the same processing algorithms?

Have no idea. The D600 has the Expeed 3 and the D750 has the Expeed 4 processor. That's all I know.

Interesting. As both sensors are the same, from what I'm aware of, you would expect similar results. Differences in the AF accuracy are a possibility and perhaps atmospherics could be a factor.

But, the result of the Nef is pretty good considering the enlargement required.

As for waiting for a Z6iii I have the original Z6 and love it and only added the Z8 because I wanted the 3D AF. If a new version Z6 were to get the same AF as the Z8/Z9 it would be a cracker.

Yes, I thought about atmosphere since it was a different day. At the same Kelvin, the moon is a slightly different color on the two days so the atmosphere was definitely different. As for the AF, that's a bit of a puzzle since the D750's would be more advanced than the D600. But that said, both these cameras have had a lot of serious use and abuse. And yes, a Z6iii with the Z8's AF would be a cracker.

In ACR I attempted to replicate the anomalies shown in your original posting. I could only get them by whacking up the Clarity.

Clarity is something I rarely use and if I do, am very wary.

You're right. I was able to replicate your results but there's still something odd going on. in the raw file I sent you, the edges of the moon's disk are a little soft. Perhaps that's why clarity caused that weird edge? I'm not sure. In the photo shot the next night with my D600 the edge of the disk is much sharper. The moon was bright enough that I was using autofocus both nights. Did the AF get sharper focus on the D600 than the D750 got? Looks that way. And on the D600 file no matter how much I increased clarity no artifacts appear. My tentative conclusion here is that clarity isn't as much the culprit at focus. All clarity did was to sharpen a poorly focused edge with the result we saw. BTW, I did try to manually focus on both nights to see if that would work better than AF. On both nights the AF was better. So yet another reason to think about replacing the D750, but still only thinking about it. Yes, the Z8 is a fabulous camera if I want a larger, heavier more expensive camera that takes far fewer photos per battery charge. Nope. Still waiting for the Z6iii or something like that. Grahame, thank you so much for your attention. Really helped!

Ok, if I take your Nef file and put it into PS ACR the 1st pic shows what you started with. If I then take the Nef and crop it to the same size jpeg as you posted, 905 x 604px with a small amount of PP my result does not show similar problems as yours.

This suggests the problems are not camera associated but in processing.

It's very interesting but when I followed the same workflow with my D600 that I used on the output from the D750 I didn't get the artifacts. So puzzling but yes, it does suggest the issue is not with the camera. I love my old D750 and Nikon really doesn't have a new camera I'd prefer, yet (Maybe if they ever come out with a Z6iii). So I rather like the idea that it's a processing effect and not a sensor issue.

Interesting. Several years ago, I had a problem with seriously distracting artifacts in the foreground of a TIFF file that I made in Lightroom of a Milky Way panorama for my custom printer. We never solved for the cause of the problem, but I had to give them a JPEG instead of the TIFF file. The camera in that case was a D810.

Can you recreate the image without making a TIFF in the process?

Here it is 100% straight out of the camera.

Did the JPEG you posted perhaps come from this TIFF?

Honestly not sure because all the photos I took that night had the same edge effect. But most likely. Are you not seeing it on the TIF and the JPEG? I see it on both.

Looks like I grabbed the wrong file. This one is a TIF
