Take them both and a back-up camera. Don't presume (assume) the lighting will be satisfactory. Take a minimum of 5 shots with each subject. If you are doing a group shot shoot atleast 5 and take care of your lighting. Shoot in Raw(NEF) + JPEG (highest quality). Have fun at my ball park!

The mirror lock-up can be done through the set-up or during Live View. Keep in mind that during the lock-up, your view-finder will be blank (dark). Your VDU will be lit.

I often will use a "small bean bag" monopod (B and H photo or possibly a local shop near you has them). It is a little larger than hand-size and has a screw post for the camera.

Shooting mode makes no difference.

You need a calculator. Try this http://www.dofmaster.com/

This is excellent advice.

Your technique is fine. Lose that location. There is too much man made structures and pollution right at the dam (see tree bra.nches)

Tip #1: Use a tripod, tripod, tripod

Tip #2: Use a self-timer with a remote, i.e., electronic shutter release.

Tip #3: Lock-up your mirror

Tip #4: Turn the vibration-reduction switch off

Tip #5: Personal safety is necessary (aligators roam at night in Fl.; in urban areas...gangs may roam)

After all of the above: ENJOY

Does anyone have a technique for making a shoulder strap to carry a tripod(vanguard).Describe the materials and connections.Attached find picture of female attachment on vanguard. I know jerry must have one he has rigged up and the other photo regulars. Thanks!! Need something that is comfortable on the shoulder. I went out on a photo shoot with my camera club, and a few of the people complained of a sore shoulder after awhile.

This is what I use. It is not DIY but it isn't terribly expensive and it works great.

I too use a case similar to this. Keeps the tripod and a monopod thrown in for good measures clean, looking new and it quite easily transported.

As you can read, we've all been there. I was just up at Glacier NP this week.

I've been using Nikon for quite awhile. However, I am unfamiliar with the D300. With bracketing you can select the span of over and under exposures relative to the average as seen by the camera. What was the actual mode the camera was set at (i.e, A,S,M,P, Auto,Scene)? Perhaps until you become more comfortable and less anxious (due to others negative comments---you know who), may I suggest shooting in an AUTO mode; thereby you can enjoy the photography.

Another possibility is combine all the images into a HDR if they were preferably shot with a tripod -mounted D300 vs. handheld.

Feel free to PM or email me some shots and I will try my best to salvage something from Glacier.

May I suggest you read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand? It is a wonderful book, and I doubt you could fully comprehend it. The problem with our world today is people such as yourself that think the only way to make a country grow is by expanding government and taking from those who actually produce.
I am only 14 and I know more about economics and politics than you, which is why I have made made $22,500 since 2009 on my own ventures. And please don't go about using the argument that if you don't agree with me, your stupid. Don't go on personal attacks in politics, or someone might go after you.

This is a very bright young man. He is correct about ad hominem attacks. As Ben Franklin eloquently wrote: people in glass houses, shouldn't throw rocks. Or the Master's own wise words: Who among you is free of sin. If people start attacking others, not on principles, but rather on superfluous comments, then that attacker better have a better defense than the counter-insurgency.

Right-on. Please...the Rights to our rescue. I hope. Your non-fictional story was perfect. Unfortunately, it is not unique to the Brits, but also USA, Germany, Canada, Australia and even in many, if not all, major businesses. In America, the backbone of small business has been crushed by regulations to the nth degree.

Does anyone have 120 size film for free or slightly above free? Prefer "chrome" (E-6) or B/W.

Thank you.

I can't wait to hear the responses to this one. Status issues will be thrown into the dirt. Chick magnets will dwell among those in the dirt. What is it that you guys gain from all of the stuff you drag around as opposed to my new Sony P&S with the advanced electronics? I certainly don't get it, but I'm sure that you are about to bitch at me about the old school stuff.

I liked the camera so well that I bought a second. Let the sentimental technology thoughts fly ... He went that away ===>

So are you saying you believe cameras such as Canon's
5D MK III and 1D X, or Nikon's D 800 do not utilize "advanced electronics", and should be considered "old school stuff" and sentimental technology?!?

No knowledgable, clear thinking individual could possibly make statements like that and hope to be taken seriously.

But to offer an answer to any reasonable portion of your question "Why Do You Drag Around Expensive Photo Gear?"... well a lot depends on what you shoot.

If you mainly shoot kids in the backyard, photos of your pets, vacation snaps, scenics, birthday parties and other similar situations, then a P&S will likely be fine for most of those.

If however you shoot action such as sports or wildlife (as I do) then a P&S is just not going to cut it.

Will your "advanced electronics" little Sony get these shots I've posted here?
Maybe, but probably not.

In any case since you have never posted *any* photos here you have taken recently, we have no way to know if you are any good and know what you are doing, and you are in no position to criticize other photographer's choice in gear.

Without any doubt, your eagle image is the best I have ever seen.

BTW, I concur with all of your comments.

I will add that I also carry a large tripod (supports 31 pounds), a mini-tripod and a bean bag monopod. In addition, when I am hiking a GPS, phone and a couple of safety tools otherwise known as weapons.

Great start towards leaving the day job in the dust. I particularly liked #1 and 3. Excellent emotional impact.

Love the emotion, Belle. There is no rule that requires you to do B/A any particular way. Especially, if one hasn't captured the emotion. Do it your way.
