I had a 12 gauge with me but I didn't think my host would appreciate me blowing a hole in his shower stall tiles.
It had nasty looking claw legs. They didn't show too well in the hurried photo I took.
Here's what my buddy the biologist said: "That's a Giant Water Bug - Lethocerus Americanus - often called the Texas Toe Biter. A vicious predator and one to be avoided. Although they don't attack humans they will give a severe bite if ticked off!"
I'm not into photgraphing bugs but I couldn't pass that one up because it was the ugliest critter I've ever seen. Whacking it with my boot a dozen times only got it mad.
Found myself sharing the shower stall with this critter at a Mexican estancia a few years ago. It was about two inches long. Got out and retrieved one of my boots to whack the insect but it was near impossible to dispatch. Finally did it but it looked something like that one scene from James Bond where he dispatches the spider. Later I contacted a friend who is a wildlife biologist and he identified it, if anyone's interested.
Happy Birthday! Mine (75th) is coming up soon so I'll see if I get the same. Actually, I've already outlived a lot of my peers so it doesn't really matter. I'm here and they're not.
You have pugs too? We also have one. Aren't they great dogs?
I bought a new house and a camera. Just count your pennies and you can do both.
Go for the chateau. You can always hire a UHH member to take your photos for you.
Incidentally, interesting series of articles on photographers and photography in the latest (March, 2012) issue of Smithsonian magazine.
That's stiil a lot more than we have in the Mohawk Valley.
Good heavens! Is it already the dawning of the Age of Aquarius?
Enjoy!! You'll have a great time. Hawaii is beautiful once you're off the beaten track.
I know how you feel. My Frau and I will be celebrating our 50th anniversary this year (in July). Decided Tahiti would be a great place to do it.
Thanks kraszmom. We'll certainly try - if the weather cooperates. Attached is a photo of the snorkel camera in use.
