I had a conversation with another person. She was a teacher, but was let go due to cutbacks. She is now working at a food store. She was eligible for COBRA benefits, for 12 months. Her father was telling me that she was dropped from COBRA due to Obamacare. I asked how long she had been on COBRA. Turns out, for about a year. Ok, so I looked up COBRA, and low and behold, COBRA benefits are only good for a year. She would have run out of this benefit anyway, but chose to blame Obamacare. I also asked if she had looked in to getting coverage under the ACA, and she had not. Given her part time situation, low income, she would definitely benefit from the ACA, but is so blinded, that she has not even considered logging in to the ACA website. Not my problem.

Hmmm, and there are stories of peoples premiums going down too. Talked to one lady on a cruise lately. She had some medical issues, nearly $100,000 worth in surgeries. She moved from California to another State, and had to change insurance companies. They could not refuse her, and when she got her premium estimate, her premium was actually lower. I would like people to really dig in to the details versus just read some media post. I have several other similar examples as well.

Last a long time is the answer. But you never know, so bring a spare.
A pro photographer told me that when he is shooting weddings he uses about 10 cards, changing them out after about 100 shots. Why, better to have 10 cards of 100 and have one fail, versus 1 card of 1000 and have one fail. He does not take the risk with all his pictures on one card.
But for the hobbyist, it is not that crucial if one card fails.

I have the Canon 5d III. Because it has two memory card slots, I have been shooting both jpeg and RAW. I recently went on a cruise, shot about 1200 pictures, which with 64 gb cards, did not tax my limit of about 2000 pictures in RAW, over 6000 jpeg.
As for the results, my JPEG pictures are quite stunning. As for the RAW's, I post processed several to compare, and to tell you the truth, the jpegs were just fine already, and saves a lot of time messing with the RAW's, since they are more or less neutral photos.
One thing I did do was only bring two lenses. A Sigma 35mm 1.4 and my Canon 100L Macro. Both were very sharp. The 100l macro is an incredible lens. I took hundreds of pictures with it on the cruise, and virtually every one was in focus, very sharp, and very colorful. Love it. And with image stabilization, this lens is perfect for quick shot and walk tours.

I do both. I have dual card, so it is a bit easier, but shooting both with a single card can be done as well.
What I find is that 90+% of the JPEG pictures come out beautiful. For some that I care to tweak some more, I use the RAW version. What I was doing is shooting only RAW, and found that I had to tweak almost all the photos, as the RAW images usually come out more neutral than I like.

That's funny, "should have bought a Canon". I am sure the 7100 will be just great. I am a Canon owner, have been for years, so I have accumulated a lot of lenses which prevents me from looking at Nikon.

Yes, in fact, often times my Iphone takes a better picture than my Canon MKIII. Go figure.

Welcome to the world of photography. There are literally hundreds of different cameras, thousands of lens, and countless other toys. The more you read and research the more you will get the hang of the numbers, the brands, and all else. But, you can always learn more. Photography is a life long hobby, easily done at most any age. I bought my granddaughter a small camera at age 8. She absolutely loved using it. And I am still enjoying photography at 63. Photography can satisfy almost any one, and can be enjoyed by people with small to very large budgets.

One thing not mentioned in the train of comment about memory cards is price. SD tends to be less expensive than CF. For instance a 32GB SD is $33, a 32GB CF is $85, both Sandisk Extreme version. If I were in the market for a camera, I would be buying one with SD or both SD and CF. I happen to have a camera with both, and am very happy with it. I actually buy the Extreme Pro versions, both 64 gb. I have never run out of space during a shot, the 64 GB holds over 1600 shots in RAW (25mb each). If you had a Nikon D800, you might want to get two memory cards as you will only get 1/3 the number of shots. In jpeg, with the same camera, you can expect about 2.5 times as many shots GB.

I like Duracell (made by Procter and Gamble) the best. Guess that's because I have Procter and Gamble stock.

Agree with the other comment you received, you provided a very good explanation. I usually just shoot RAW and post process. I like to do it, so it is not a problem, and rarely do I print the pictures. But with grandkids, printing some often comes up, so what I can do with my 5D-III is to simply do both, RAW on one memory card and jpeg on the other. I assume that most of the time the jpeg will be just fine for a quick print.

If you are shooting on a sunny day, and your subject is close to you, you might want to use a flash. Sounds odd, but this helps with some of the shadows on faces from the sunlight. Also, it is best not to shoot a face with the sunlight coming from the side. You will get shadows from the nose and eye socket. Again, a flash can help this.

Exactly. That is what I do now, I work with the photo in CS6, then import to LR5 for final processing and print formatting. I have all my printer presets, light adjustments etc., set up in Lightroom.

With this, as you say, you do not have to convert the file at all, LR takes care of that.
