I have download all my photos from today to my computer. When I went to safely disconnect my card reader I got this message... It has been awhile, usually I get [safe to disconnect]?

I have had that problem also. I just log off, remove the card and then log back on again. During log off all external drives are dismounted. When you log back on, the computer then tries to mount all external drives as indicated by the appearance of the drives being shown on the desktop as the computer mounts each external drive in turn.

That should be a fool proof method of properly pulling a card that refuses to "safely remove." You only need to do this when the computer won't "safely remove."

I should add that if you cannot log off because of that card's activity then you really do have something trying to access the card. Cancel the logoff and do whatever detective work you need to do to find that application and do whatever you deem is proper to terminate that application.

If you suspect a card, destroy it and then toss it. Cards are too cheap not to just get another one. Why destroy? Data can be recovered no matter what using forensics.

And eject the card properly (insuring that all write operations to the card are completed) before removing from an external reader.

I've don't recall ever being bit by that maneuver but I agree that's a good way to corrupt a card. Lucky so far but heed TriX's advise along with the old remove card from camera while doing some housekeeping trick or merely just while camera is on.

As a seller of cameras and SD cards I tell my traveling customers to take two cards and change them every day if they do not have a computer with. Should you loose your camera or it is stolen you still have 1/2 of your pictures. Told over 100 people, 4 have come back to thank me.

There are a lot of reasons how you can lose your camera. In addition to theft, here's one for the book. My friend and mentor had this wonderful 6 x 6 format camera that he used in all his work. He was on the road when he had to check something in the trunk. His camera bag was in the way so he put it on the roof and forgot to put it back. Bye bye favorite camera. Accidents happen. Copy off frequently. As I mentioned before, both of my cameras have two card slots. I have it set to take pics on card 1. Then at some point I copy over to card 2 and swap that one out with another one. Card 2 doesn't have to be a fast card. Slower cards are really cheap these days.

When you get back to your computer you can move them off to your computer drive or an external large capacity drive. This way you can minimize your photo loss.

You can replace cameras - you can't replace valued photos

Amazing resolution. Gotta ask. Are you using image stab...? At 82, I *have* to use IS on long shots but have found that rotating the tripod mount bracket 90 degrees such that I can hold the camera / lens using my left hand on the tripod mount bracket and the right hand on the camera helps - that and the IS is turned on.

I currently shoot up to 600mm equiv.

Trick I learned long time ago was first photo on card is your contact info in case you lose it. Most people don't want your photos. I found sd card on street all little league photos. No way to return it.

Great idea!

Re: SD card back in cameras. Some cameras that have two slots allow you to backup (copy) from one slot to the other. Do the backup and then remove the backup card for safe storage and put another SD card in slot 2. You don't need an expensive, fast card for the backup. When you get home then move them over to your computer or whatever and recycle that card after you have confirmed that the move was successful.

On computers: be sure you are comfortable with backing up your data *and* cloning your computer "C" drive in case of catastrophic failure.

I usually go a "tat" under. I can always bring up the shadows (lower levels). You cannot recover highlights that hit the rail. They're gone forever

Thanks for the info. But as I said, I got into photography because of the song "Kodachrome"
“Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day"

I know lots of folks love B&W photos. I just don't happen to be one of them. My loss!

I liked Kodachrome 25 for flesh tones. Amazing improvement over the original Kodachrome 10

My all time favorite film camera is the Canon T90 (I have three) and a nice collection of FD lens. I also have Nikon D7000 and a D500 digital cameras with a fair collection of DX lens.

They all have their use - they all are fairly heavy cameras (around 4 lbs with lens).

[A response from cameraf4]

"Now there! There is a Canon that a dyed in the wool Nikon guy like me could really go for. Canon T90. When Nikon introduced the FA (first camera with Automatic Multipattern Metering --- now called Matrix or Evaluative and on just about every SLR-type camera) I was hugely disappointed. The T90 (and the Olympus OM4) had multispot metering where the operator could choose up to 9 different spots in the scene to base exposure on and the cameras would average them all out. Right up my alley.

Apologies for messing up the quote mode:

I use that multispot feature a lot. I used to have exposure problems with my A1's center weighted metering. No more after I got the T90. It was also the proto... for camera body styling for decades to come.

That was then. Now, I use my Nikons mostly. I must do a shoot with my T90 and try "the darkroom.com" as a developer and digital scanner and see if they are as good as they say. My fav.. film is Kodak's Portra 400. But that's a topic for another thread

Thanks.

I hate to say it but I'm for least amount of Photoshopping possible unless Photoshopping is the main purpose of the photo.

Why not make original photos available? Even a JPG would be helpful

If you are going to reformat your XQD card, do it in the camera and yes you should move your photos off the card. Not sure that you need to reformat at least after a shoots and moving those shoots off the card.

Keeping valued photos on the card is not the best reliable backup approach. You need the speed for RAW shots and for rapid fire shots. I use my SD card for most normal shots and can if necessary switch the priority or simply remove the XQD card which would force the camera to use the SD card. Switching priority would be the preferred approach.
