Your subject matter will, to a certain extent, determine an appropriate head system. If you are doing nature/wildlife, SPEED and ergonomics will be a large consideration.

I really like your bodypod rig. Don't want to highjack the thread...but would like to know what components you used. Would PM be best? Thanks!

Very nicely done. Appreciate the information too. I had a chance to capture some of these on trip to Yellowstone in February. They are truly beautiful.

By the way, Gatlinburg is a neat place to visit and there are photo ops as well, even though many consider it a tourist trap.
Just north of the park is Sieverville with Dollywood. I consider Dollywood one of the best theme parks in the southeast, including those in Orlando. Great place for rides, entertainment, and good food, and not nearly as crowded as the Orlando parks.

I would agree about Dollywood...but for this trip, I m sticking to nature mostly. We'll look around Nashville I suspect then I'm headed for the hills. The other stops are for library/courthouse research...I will be doing post process work in LR. All good!

Best to walk around when possible, much bether for phot ops too. The main drag is just that, a real drag! "Hurry up and wait." If you know what I mean?

It's looking that way to me too. As photogs we keep different hours so I'm planning to work that to my advantage both for traffic and restaurants. I like to hike too...so that will help.

I have to thank you for starting this thread -- I clicked on the links provided by several people responding to your request for info, which lead me to the link for the Great Smokey Mountain Photography Summit website. I have a dear friend who lives in that area, so we are now planning for me to visit and both of us will be attending the summit on Oct. 26-30, 2016. We never would have known about this, if not for your post, so thank you again! And here is the link, for anyone interested:

And Cade's Cove is on our list of activities, as well

This is what makes forums great! That summit is looking more attractive by the minute. Best to you and your friend for fun, learning and great photography!

While I would certainly bring and expect to use a zoom, around the Cove, there are many times that you can get very close to some of the wildlife, especially the deer. I actually had a fawn come up to me once, but that was certainly abnormal and not a good thing for an animal to do, to lose its natural fear of man.

About every time I have gone around the loop whether it is riding a bike, in a car or walking it, I have always seen deer and some very close.

Thanks for helping me set some realistic expectations...I think my I gave up shutter speed instead of ISO and that maybe part of my problem. Thanks also for the detail on the road Gary...navigator, I am not.

the Tremont is a great place to stay. It is also the site of a spring wildflower photo workshop in early April, as well as the Great Smokey Mtns Photo Summit, at the end of October. If you book there, you'll probably deal with Glen Reagen-explain to him you will be there to photograph, and ask him to get some location notes from the wildflower workshop instructors-he'll most likely be more than happy to help.

Perfect and thanks again Travis!

All correct, but from the "Y" in Townsend it is only a little over 7 miles to the Cades Cove entrance. The "Y" is where state rt 73 in townsend intersects with Little River Road and Laurel Creek Road. Laurel Creek Road leads to Caves Cove. :) :)

So much to see...so little time with 5 days in the Townsend area... I thought I might checkout the Tremont. Would you recommend a different location to lodge at for traffic and ease of access to less traveled areas? Or?

Tennessee has some of the greatest state parks not to mention the GSMNP and the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (on the KY border near Oneida and Jamestown).

As for Cades Cove, get there early and realize that toward the middle to end of the day, the cars going around the Cades Cove loop (one way) will get to a bumper to bumper condition. I'm not sure that the gates will be open for sunrise, but if you don't mind the hike, you can go on through and hike to Sparks Lane as suggested above as a good shooting area. From Townsend, it is probably about 20 mins to Cades Cove. Tremont is a great place to go since there are many trails leading from this area to waterfalls, flowers, etc. Anywhere within the GSMNP, you will find things to shoot or just enjoy.

As for places not to far from Carthage, south of Cookeville is Burgess Falls State Park, Rock Island State Park, and Fall Creek Falls State Park. Fall Creek Falls has several large waterfalls and is worth the visit if it isn't too far. North of Cookeville is Standing Stone State Park.

Thanks for all the suggestions! With all the traffic, is there a better place to stay? Or go for Pics? I don't have any reservations yet...just trying to get an idea of what all there is and where I want to go...it seems a bit over-whelming.

Hi, I am new on the forum. I have been reading the forum for a while but thought I would register and post a comment on this subject as I have been to GSMNP/Gatlinburg many times for vacation with the family. Every one of these suggestions is right on as far as photo opportunity goes. There is no shortage of photo locals in this area. Highway 441 from Gatlinburg to Cherokee, NC has many turn offs with great scenery. This is the road with the Newfound Gap parking area and the turn off for Clingmans Dome. If you will be hiking to the top of Clingmans Dome from the parking area it is paved but a fairly steep walk.

Thanks for the suggestions...the hike sounds good but the knees don't like steep downward motion...Clingmans Dome has come up so guessing it is not to miss.

Time permitting, Fall Creek Falls State Park. Numerous waterfalls. You might even want to check into the lodge for an overnight there. This is a magnificent state park. The red marker is where the park is located.

Love waterfalls! Would it be less crowded?

Try the one way dirt road that goes off to the right near one of the churches about half way in. Interesting trip, little traffic, nice views, chance of wildlife. Also,if you have 4WD,try the other one that takes of near the far end of Cades Cove. 4WD realy neaded.Stop and look at some of the water crossings. Note,Cades Cove is a real pain with traffic most of the time!

Really appreciate the specifics... but, half way in on what road? I thought traffic might be a challenge. Any other off the beaten track suggestions really welcomed! I don't have a 4WD... :x
