I have been using a D70 and the i-TTL flash on the camera. If the D40 can be set at 1600 ISO, you may not need a flash.
I always ask the wedding planner if flash can be used.
All my photography instructors strongly suggested a better flash, but I have been a little slow to respond. I did break for a DX 18-200 lens and that is the only one I need.
A fully charged battery will take several hundred pictures.
Here are a few of my pictures:

Don't worry. You'll do fine.
Or .... "I know what you're thinking!"
Oops. Here's that picture.
Mother bear and cubs
I was talking about a picture from a different post. Here is the bear picture I was talking about. It was posted with other pictures of a mother bear and two cubs .... but the date on this one made me think it was one of your earlier pictures.
I am impressed with them all, of course.

No wonder she wrote such a sweet post. She loves your flowers. JT. Great picture.
Driving across a bridge over Lake Eufala, I thought the scene below was very attractive and drove down to take pictures. Passing photographers honked their understanding when they saw me stuck in the sand.
Outstanding. I've gotta learn HDR.
In most areas of Texas you would be jailed for shooting that young buck with bow or rifle. The first points on the antlers must extend beyond the ears this season. Other hunters complained when my brother took similar pictures in deer season. Any photographer would be proud to have taken this picture.
The third bear in another of your post seems to be dated 2006, yet it is the same brown bear with the two cubs. ????????
My tropical Hibiscus is done for the summer but we have had one for the last twenty years. The last two years we've gotten the interlaced tree style and all the neighbors have admired them.
It's all photoshop. I made a new layer, got a picture of clouds googling (clouds images).I used magic wand to select the background, erased it .... dragged the clouds to the B25 picture, then moved that layer behind the plane.
I hope you have Photoshop ... or Gimp.
I did do a poor job on the arm but I used the clone tool in photoshop. The arm is different colors .... reflections, light, etc. .... and I should have spent a little more time getting all the tones right. Of course it's fun .... and good if you spend enough time.
That is photoshop CS5.5.
