From the flow of this discussion, it doesn't sound like very many people are taking advantage of tool box that Adobe built specifically for photographers..."Adobe Photoshop Lightroom". With it I import the files off of the Flash Card into the file that I want it in--I also have a duplicate copy go to a second drive, --attach keywords etc. It has the same front end (Camera Raw) that PS5 has. You can make all of the adjustments that you want--NON-DESTRUCTIVELY. And, when you need to make more serious corrections (taking that extra 20 pounds off of the bride...) you click the Edit In PS5 button...it takes you directly to PSx (or Elements) creates a duplicate copy automatically then brings you right back where you were when you're done. Printing directly from Lightroom is just as easy. Lightroom merges the RAW file with the adjustment "sidecar" then manages the printer output. When you want to exchange the picture with someone else you need to use the Export Button, tell it where you want it sent and in what format...what level of compression if exporting in Jpeg.
Trust me on this...Adobe did a great job of providing the tools that I (we) need bundled into a single product.

I agree, right now I am working on some old pictures from last year, in lightroom, synching metadata, and batch synch develop changes and final adjust in PS with the TIFF file save back into LR I still have my original RAWand with one click I can reset any changes I made in the raw file

I always print from TIFF files. All reputable printers will print from them. Never use a cheap printshop that demands JPGs, they are primarily for low budget snapshots.

I also only print from TIFF Files, I use an Epson 3880

I am in the same boat. i converted all my RAW images to DNG thru lightroom but after i make adjustments i exported them back to my hard drive as DNG's and cannot view them. this doesnt help me at all. i would like to give the pics to friends via a flash drive but if they cannot view them, what is the point?

After you save the DNG, you need to also save as a jpeg in LR.If you want to make additional changes do it to the DNG file, not the jpeg.

but when i go to print isnt it better quality off the RAW or DNG file? or if i want to give prints to someone on a hardrive wouldnt they get better quality printing from a DNG?

Now you are getting into printing which is a different subject. Moose Peterson has posted a great PDF on Printing see the article http://www.moosepeterson.com/blog/2011/12/23/mooses-print-lab-printing/

As previously stated RAW is your "negative" that you work on in your "darkroom" your computer with your post processing software, plug-ins etc. so you get you final photograph the way you want it. You the do your print in JPEG and set your JPEG settings to conform to what media you want to place your image WEB, E-Mail, Print. Remember Ansel Adams spent a long time in the darkroom refining the final print

bent pins has been my problem, the pins need to be set deep so the guides have the travel needed to line the card up with the pins

Thatb is why the more expensive ones are better the pins are set way in and it is easy to slide the card in

great book about Lightroom is Nat Coalson"s "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 - Streamlining your digital workflow process" Avaialable on Amazon.com. I had it rebound as Nat said in the book intro as a spiral bound book.

I would not watermark/copyright y
all your pictures in LR. I only apply the watermark when I export the picture. You never know when someone would want to use the picture in an article etc and need a non-watermarked phicture

I was away on a shoot and let my card reader at home . I got one at radio shack and the pins to connect to my cf cards bent making it unusable. buy a Delkin or a Lexar reader they work great even though they are a little more pricey $30-40

if price is important then look at the Sigma 150-500 or the 50-500 in the $1K range rather than the $9K for the Nikon 500
