Accurate manual focus is impossible, especially with tele, with the LCD screen. If you do everything auto, and happy with your results, then you are probably OK with a camera that only has an LCD. Or the latest I-phone may be quite adequate for your photo needs. Why waste money on an advanced camera whose capabilities you will never want to use? However should you find yourself wanting to do some more creative work with your camera, you WILL find the LCD limiting.

Touch screen focus on my Lumix GM5 is spot on every time. Can’t do that with a viewfinder.

I would not buy one without a viewfinder any more. I have one without(Nikon P7700) and shoot action movies of dog agility competition. I have messed up some because of sun on the screen and can't see what I'm shooting.

Some new LCDs use cell phone technology and work pretty good in bright sun. Nikon hasn’t caught up. My Panasonic Lumix GM5 has...and it is now a discontinued model..

Both are decent options. I’d probably go with Fuji because I detest Sony’s menus. But you really should try each before you commit.

If you don’t like either, try a Lumix G85. It’s Micro 4/3, 16MP, but much more travel-friendly with its smaller, lighter lenses. And I sincerely doubt you’ll miss the extra 8MP and one stop of ISO advantage, since Panasonic’s Dual IS II is so good. The G85 body is *very* ergonomically sound, and Panasonic’s menus are among the most logically designed.

If you want really small consider the Panasonic GM5. I love mine for travel. I got it because it has a viewfinder and I do most of my shooting outdoors where previous LCD only screens would wash out. The LCD screen on this little guy is surprisingly good in bright light.

Since this camera is so good Paanasonic discontined it. The replacement 850 doesn’t have the viewfinder but does have a flip screen. If the LCD is as good as the one on the GM5 it might be OK.

Both use same M4/3 sensor as G85.

Thanks SS. I figure that the gas costs will about be the same as the cost of flights, rental car, motel/hotel, and meal expenses, and maybe be a bit less - and I can go where I want and when I want and not be on a tight schedule. Plus, when I am done with my adventures, I can sell it and get some of my money back. I will whistle you up if I get out your way................ Have a very Merry Christmas and excellent New Year!!!!!

Let me know if you get out west! (Idaho)

I plan a trip €œback east starting in September. Want to hit Acadia National Park for the leave change. Then maybe a little ways up the Canadian coast before turning south. A stop at Lake George with some friends (who will probably meet up in Acadia) before heading south to my brother’€™s place on the beach in SC, and then maybe to my brother-inlaws in FL before turning west. With a visit to Mamouth Cave and maybe Branson.

Did a similar trip a couple of years ago with our pickup camper to our 50th reunion in NJ. About the same mileage and time (2 months) as our two trips to AK from ID. The motorhome will be more cushy but since we spend most time outside when stopped that time of year not much different. Gas cost will be more impressive than with my diesel pickup but so it goes.

Who knows the refurb D850s might be available by then. Otherwise my D800 is good enough to win blue ribbons at State Fair.

Sadly I’m losing my lifetime companion in the next few months so need to find a new one. My girl Gretchen is a great travel companion, but not much of a conversationalist.

Gretchen’s spot in the RV.

I didn't see where anyone replied as to why you open up a stop or two. I'm sure old timers know but in case there are some folks who've never studied the ins and outs of exposure, I will tell them. It's all about middle gray. Light meters see everything as gray and automatic exposure systems try to make everything "middle gray." If your scene has a lot of white, as in snow or a wedding dress, the camera will be fooled into thinking the scene is gray rather than white. Open up a stop or two and presto...your snow is white.

Yes, that is the understanding I was hoping to elicit from the OP.

And perhaps the understanding that it applies in M mode as well as it does in the other autoexposure modes (A, S, and P). You usually apply it differently in M mode; simply by setting the exposuure to + whatever. Or with Nikons you can apply EV and set the meter to zero.

Cameta has a pretty good return policy. You only pay shipping...both ways. No restocking fees, etc.

Also they extended the return period for items bought the month prior to Christmas to start the 30 day clock on 12/25.

Mine will be delivered after that so if it doesn't meet my expectations I'll send it back and get a new one.

Nikon wants $650 for a new D5600, and I don't see a new one on Cameta's site. Adorama is out of them too. The refurb is $519 with free shipping and no sales tax. So a much better deal than on the D7500.

(Plus, as I've elaborated elsewhere, the D5xxx meets my criteria better than any D7xxx)

Always good to buy the best you can afford! If you already have FX lenses, you can buy an FX camera without the added expense of acquiring lenses right away.

Although FX cameras are generally bigger and heavier. And if you are into wildlife you may get many more Megapixels on the DX area. The D750 only uses about 10 MP on the DX area. D5xxxs and D7xxxs 24.

Hey guys I am going to purchase a Nikon D7200 one way or another. After a lot of pricing research I see Cameta has a refurbished at $749 with a 1 year warranty and a few other sites have new at about $800. The same body and accessories with the 1 year warranty. It's not so much the $50 savings, I would probably add a remote shutter release anyway, but why spend more for the same thing? Plus Cameta has been my go store for awhile. I have never bought a refurbished body before. I have bought 2 refurbished lenses from Cameta before with excellent results so what do you think? Thanks and Happy Holidays.

I am in the disagreeable (or at least disagreeing) minority that prefers Nikon refurbs. Just ordered my sixth (D5600). All previous have come in new condition with low shutter counts and performed flawlessly.

All new products have a small percentage that will have early failures, usually due to manufacturing errors but sometimes due to a faulty component. Refurbs are likely to be past that and are checked individually by a Nikon tech.

I have never needed a Nikon warranty but do buy my refurbs from Cameta because their one year warranty is automatic and free compared to A and B. And their service is as good.

I consider refurbs better than new.

CR attempts to be objective. It tries to avoid bias. I like that a lot. However, it misses out on subtle differences between products that can prove very valuable to me as a user. I have subscribed for years and use it as a guide to look at major features of consumer products. If those features are what I am looking for, it is great as a guide. However, I have been very happy for years with multiple purchases rated as mediocre because I value a range of attributes not examined adequately by CR. This is especially true of high end products. The 7500 is a higher end product. Personally, based on reviews by reputable sources like DP Review and also examining features, I would choose a D 500. But the difference in price is significant. The 7200 is a great camera with a few less features and a lower price still. Great photos are at your finger tips with all three. I personally wouldn’t consider a D5600, although it has nice features and can also take great pictures. In short, although I like CR, sometimes they are wrong. Sometimes products are rated too highly, sometimes superior products are rated too low. I would trust CR with point and shoots and entry level DSR’s, but never higher end products like the D 7500 or its more prestigious older brothers like the D500 or D 850. For higher end products I rely on professional reviews and consumer comments and don’t even reference CR.

I just ordered a D5600. Because my primary critera was light weight. And because I much prefer the Dd5xxx control approach over unlighted buttons and an unreadable (without reading glasses) little green screen. Plus I really use the fully articulated screen. (Used a D5100 and D5300 before this purchase.)

Yes, I know the D500 solved the unighted button problem. But it weighs several times as much.

Plus my D800 is destined to replacement by a D850 when refurbs become available (about a year).

Meh, I wouldn't pay any attention to CR. I remember reading their review of a Corvette a few years back. Points were deducted for lack of a back seat, unsatisfactory trunk space, and poor gas mileage LOL.

I have a D7500 and am completely happy with it. I don't use it much now (my wife does though) and image quality is absolutely on par with the D500 - it's the same sensor so it should be! Use CR for things like toasters, use sites that specialize in cameras for camera reviews and info.

Speaking of which, here's my D7500 review:

Also, some images from the D7500:

Illustrative case of a picture being worth 1,000 words.

Very nice.

Interesting that they rate several FX cameras higher. Duh!

I don’t get CR any longer but consider them a valuable information source. I sometimes have different criteria than they use for their ratings so look more at the individual categories, e.g. frequency of repair for automobiles. Image quality is one I’d be interested in for cameras. I don’t get how they went awry on that one for the 7500.

Now I feel really stupid, What is EV? Exposure Vary?

Exposure Value

It is + or - stop adjustments to the meter.

Why would you want to INCREASE it for very bright scenes, e.g. snow or a bride in a white dress?

I read everyone's posts. I am happy to tell you that I'm going to try manual for a while. We are having a wet-ice-wet-ice storm in Boston today. I would love to take pictures, but I'm waiting until tomorrow.

Ah! Non-intuitive secret here. If your image is mostly snow and you use matrix metering you need to set your EV UP 1.5 or 2 in A, S, or P mode. Otherwise you get grey snow.

Many think because the scene is so bright they need to set EV down. Or in manual set the meter to one or two plus EV. Wrong!

Know why?

I knew Jeeps used to have a bad rep. Hadn’t heard much about that in recent years.

I bought my little Patriot used with two years left on the warranty. So far it has been a gem. Seems like I might want to send it fown the road when it nears the end of the warranty.

Since I’ve had it I have noticed that there are lots of them here in Idaho. Seems like the most common car.

My son had a Liberty for several years. No issues.

Are you talking about the car, a Lexus? I just want a new Jeep Grand Cherokee! Just kidding. Way out of my reality.

Hah! I recently bought a Jeep Patriot to tow behind my motorhome. I went for it because of the light weight and ease of adjusting for flat tow. It is a very basic model. Especially compared to the 4Runner I dumped when I got it.

Interestingly, I really like the little critter!

So, to bring it back to the discusion at hand, it is full manual! (Including the door locks, which I grew up with, but now miss the most).

I already wanted to replace it with a Cherokee ( not grand...too heavy) but they messed it up for towing.
