Consumer Reports Ranks The Nikon D7500 At The Bottom

I just noticed this on my cell phone app for Consumer Reports. They list 25 DSLR cameras they tested. #1 is the Nikon D500, with a score of 79. They tested various models of Canon, Pentax, and Sony.

At the very bottom, with a really low score of 45, is the Nikon D7500. Even the Nikon D5600 scored higher.

The main criticism appears to be image quality that is rated as fair. (Image quality combines several tests, including regular photos, low-light photos, and flash photos as well as resolution, macro, veiling glare, vignetting, color and geometric distortion tests, among others).

I was really surprised and disappointed by their findings. Most reviews I read and viewed were favorable, at least on picture quality. This is a camera I was strongly considering as my next purchase.

For those who have this camera, what have you found regarding image quality?

I have the D7500 and love it. I upgraded from the d3100. I have no problem with the image quality and get outstanding comments on my photos from friends. Unless you're looking for a full frame I would consider it.

That's surprising. The D7500 has the same sensor as the D500. Some of their test parameters have nothing to do with the camera - macro, veiling glare, vignetting, and geometric distortion. Those are all associated with the lens being used. I think they don't have any expertise when it comes to cameras. I have a D500. It has stellar performance. The image quality of the D7500 should be basically identical to the D500.

Imaging Resource (about 2-3 weeks ago) rated it as Camera of the Year. Photography Life rated it high. Other reviewers have given it high marks. I have the D7500 and love it. Image quality is excellent in my opinion! Consumer Report is stepping out of their area of expertise reviewing cameras. They are the last resource I would go to in this case.

Do you suppose they are qualified to rate cameras? The same team that did that ranking probably just finished testing toothpaste and next they will be looking at snowblowers.

I would look elsewhere (DxOMark, etc.) for a better qualified opinion. There is even more expertise here on UHH.

I just bought a 7500 and did a direct low light comparison to my old 7100 using one lens for both. It was a 2 sec exposure f3.5 on a kit lens and zoomed in LR to 200 percent. The 7100 had more noise. Both were sharp. Color might have been a little better on 7500. I'm very happy so far.

I have never put much stock in Consumer Reports ratings. When I was an appliance tech, a lot of the appliances they top rated were the ones I was working on the most. Their methods of testing products are not all that great. If you want to test a product it needs to be tested like a consumer uses it, not in a laboratory under pristine conditions.

One must carefully read Consumer Reports' analysis of electronic devices with particular attention to the criteria utilized for evaluation. Frequently those criteria are skewed toward persons with less than enthusiast levels of interest and are therefore of limited value to knowledgeable consumers. I know having been a subscriber for over 30 years. Even guys like Rockwell, Northrup and to a much lesser extent, Perry and Hogan, are sometimes off on there opinions about equipment. And they are experts. Do you really expect anything better from Consumer Reports?

Exactly correct. They don't even differentiate between which of their test parameters have to do with the camera and which are associated with the lens.

Well if you are making this decision because you are pissed at their evaluation of the D7500, it is a precipitous one and means you will miss out on some of the best reports on goods and services in the industry. Your loss. Ignorance is bliss.

I wouldn't too much stock into CR's analyses. For years they didn't even rate the Nikon Ftn. They use different criteria than a photographer might. I have several friends that work there and I have a good idea how they arrive at their conclusions. They are great for cars and appliances but not great for cameras.

...and many electronics. Isn't it amazing how some of these posters get their panties in a wad when one evaluation of their precious equipment goes awry? Serious cases of insecurity if you ask me.
