Day # 11 - Date : Wednesday, October 25, 2017

Due to a visit to the local hospital to have my bum leg looked at (again), missed a bird day. So, this should have been posted yesterday. Oh well, that's just the problem of getting old and a bit decrepit.
Ah, the glorious Blue Jay, what I call the "pig" of the bird world. I have a small of flock of about 6 birds that are unmercifully attacking my feeding stations. They don't eat hardly any of the sunflower seeds/peanuts on the feeders, rather they are collecting them for the upcoming winter. I can put a half a kilo of whole peanuts out and within about 10 minutes they are all gone. As for the sunflower seeds, it is quite surprising just how many of these seeds they can put in their mouth. Once counted one put over 60 seeds in its crop. Head looked like a blue tennis ball. It appears that they take a great pleasure to scatter all the smaller birds that appear to be in their way. It's comical to sit on the deck and watch these characters hiding the peanuts all over the yard, in the crooks of trees, my wife's flowers, the lawn, etc. But it's twice as comical to watch the squirrel's following them around and digging up their treasure troves. Beautiful, colourful birds, but still can be quite bothersome. But one has to take a bit of the bad with all the good, right????
Hope you enjoy my pics of these blue wonders.

Beautiful set. I'm sure the birds appreciate you feeding them year round. It is also nice to have birds to watch all year long.

I enjoy looking after them all year round, even though its getting a bit more expensive nowadays. Thanks Tikva for the kind comment.

Beautiful shots, Ron, of one of my favorite birds!

Thanks for looking and commenting sailorsmom. One of my favourites also, especially in the spring when they are all gussed up.

These birds are not supper pretty, but they do have an elegance about them that is as good as pretty. Very nice images.

Yes Bill de, sparrows are usually the plain janes of the birding world, the little brown birds people usually talk about. But they still fill the yard with action and song which makes up for it.

Great shots of that pretty little chipping sparrow!

Thanks merrytexan for the comment. I usually have at least a half a dozen breeding in my vicinity each summer.

Great shot ron! We have a lot of them here.

Yes, I found that they are much more plentiful south of me, especially in Florida and Texas. Thanks for the kind comment.

Beautiful shots Ron! I had goldfinches in the summer but they left and I haven't seen them lately. I still put out Niger seed though.

I usually have them all year, but much more plentiful in the fall and winter. Thanks for looking.
