I wanted some grocery items, so I went to the local supermarket, 4.5 miles away, rather than to the big one 7.5 miles away. Just out of curiosity, I looked at the ice cream. Prices ranged from $7.39 to $7.99. In the big supermarket (Hannaford), I pay $2.48. The difference in the cost of gas for going to Hannaford is only $0.48, so it's worth the drive.
Many years ago, I used to work for Southland Corporation, the parent company of 7-11. They used to say that they could charge more for the same goods that could be purchased much cheaper elsewhere because, "they were more convenient". They became very successful with that approach. Convenience, you see, is a commodity and many are willing to pay for the convenience of being close requiring less time. As to your question as to whether it's worth the drive; that can only be answered by you. Did you spend more money or did you spend the extra time and pay less? It's the consumer that makes that choice and in most cases "Convenience" wins out.
