Thank you to all who responded to my query. Your comments added to both sides of the pro/con seesaw that I had been mulling over for months.

This week I received the word that my name had reached the top of the wait list, and a Z9 was available. I declined. Here’s why:

1) weight. One of the (few) things I am good at is BIF with my current D500/500mm PF, and I was not looking forward to adding to the heft.

2) FX reach. Yes, the Z9 has a DX mode, but I already have that.

3) New camera to learn. I know that will have to happen sometime, but not today.

4) Taking shorter trips with the money. Hitting Cape May this September.

5) Price and other spending priorities. Jeez, $5,500 is a lot of money.

I know that every time I see an out-of-focus shot, I will have my doubts, but the Z9 or its brothers will always be out there if I change my mind.

Be well, and stay cool.

If I can't create great images today, I can buy a mirrorless camera tomorrow.

When you change to shooting a mirrorless camera, you already know you're a better photographer.

you know some people will see this as a serious statement and say I saw it on UHH so it must be true

If you want to be a better photographer, there are two things you must do above all others: buy a mirrorless camera and use it.

if you say so you don't need to know about composition, lighting & the exposure triangle, just buy a camera πŸ˜‚

look at it in a realistic way , people have more options, now you have film, mirror less & dslr, large format, medium format, of course phones, all depend on your preference & skill !

Everything in this article is true the only thing left out is editing, if we don't get it right we will always add our little seasonings, I'm not talking about changing the image but dodge & burn were needed or stitch a panoramic view πŸ‘

Why do those people who have a choice in a system that still has DSLRs and mirrorless still purchase technologically antiquated and some discontinued DSLRs that came out years ago that will soon not be supported.
They have the option of buying far more technologically advanced cameras for the same money that will still receive service.
Just curious what is the driving force to spend money on old obsolete cameras?

Why should you change systems if you're already invested $ for years in a DSLR system that does what you need? If it ain't broke don't fix it πŸ€”

I'm primarily a portrait, real estate and landscape photographer, but I just booked a late afternoon/evening outdoor party photographing attendees. I'm comfortable with off-camera flash, but I'm expecting to use a speed light mounted on my camera, and I'm wondering if anyone can offer tips on settings. My go-to is spot focus in manual, but I'm wonder if there might be a better alternative for this situation. Also, would TTL be best? Lastly, I've also been asked to provide some video of the band as well. I know this is a tall order, so any advice would be appreciated. Oh, and I'm shooting with a Sony A7RIV. Thanks!

Best advice I can give is fast shutter speed and and ISO , just think of it like shooting in lots of light
