When my GF wanted to move up from her point&shoot, I gave her my well used Nikon D7200 and three DX lenses. It is all still going strong, and She really likes it. If she keeps advancing, I will get her a Nikon D750. With both cameras, she will be ready for just about anything.
He asked about a DSLR, which would rule out all mirrorless cameras.
Between these three, Rockwell provides the most data, the most photos to back up his opinions, the most useful info on older gear (Ai-s lenses, etc), and the least nonsense...such as “Sniff Tests.”
Nothing is ever safe (totally without risk). All you can hope for is to limit / lower risks. A hard case, such as a Pelican, would help.
The good news is that now that GOP law makers, and their staffs, are catching the Virus, they are more willing to spend some money fighting the virus. A cure may not be far off...now that they are looking for it, rather than denying the ailment’s existence.
I am O+, and generally healthy. I have always had better than average immunity. In childhood I had many diseases, and injuries, but survived them. From teenage on I have had few diseases, and injuries, and easily weathered the few I did experience. Blood type does seem to be a factor.

During this Coronavirus thing, what do you do if you are supposed to limit your social contacts? If you're like me you play on the computer and involve some friends.
I am retired, and somewhat reclusive. I stay home a lot, and: read, listen to audible books, watch videos on DVD, watch streaming tv / movies, play video games (console, and tablet), converse with friends, and family, via email, text, and phone calls, cook, play board games, shop online, relate to my live in-also retired, reclusive-GF, help care for her pet cat, plan future travels, and get out to secluded places to photograph sites, and animals, far from the maddening crowd (nod to Thomas Hardy), and learn from it all. I, and my GF, are rarely face to face with another person, in person....other than each other, and so are in little danger of being infected. Our lives during this corona crisis are pretty much the same as they were before the crisis.

Politics.
People are sick and dying.
Why bring your hate in here?
Not hate. Humor. Sarcasm. Better to laugh off the paranoia of idiots than to stress out fearfully worrying about the latest fad threat.
Sanitizers may slow down the reproduction rate of bacteria, but won’t even kill them. They won’t harm viruses. The Covid-19 CoronaVIRUS IS a VIRUS. Sanitizers have no effect on it. Save your money for pain pills.
For two ply tp, Angel Soft is pretty good. I prefer the three ply Quilted Northern Ultra Plush....in Mega Rolls.
I use a Nikon D750 camera, and a manual Nikon Ais 50mm f/1.2 lens for low light. It works great.
I’m not worried. I am a Deep State Insider, and I already got my vaccine....thanks to The Lizard Queen Hillary Most High. Now I am going out to attend Trumputin rallies, news conferences, town halls, fund raisers, etc. HAHAHAHA!
