I have a friend who is deciding what model from the Nikon cameras to use for shooting pictures in low light, people in a church sanctuary, and without making a lot of adjustments to the camera with a lens 18-140mm.
Any suggestions and thanks in advance.

The lens is best suited for Nikon's DX style cameras. From the current models, possibilities include: D3500, D5600, D7500 and D500.

I guess it depends on how much money your friend wants to spend on a camera and if your friend is looking for a full frame or crop sensor camera. The best Nikon model for low light photography is the D5 but that's a rather pricey camera. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the D7200, probably the Best Nikon crop sensor camera for low light photography. I don't own a D5 but I do own a D7200 and it does an excellent job in low light situations and a new one costs under $700.

Seems kind of backward to pick a lens and then say "What's the best camera for low light situation to use with this lens?"

What's your budget? The lens you're picking would suggest a limited budget, in a way you could pick the highest numbered camera you can afford and you'll do alright. If budget isn't a concern, dump the lens and get a D500 or D5 camera body and invest in some constant aperture 2.8 lenses and you'll have a winning combination.

This is a really vague, open ended question and there could be a multitude of reasonable answers.

The D5 is not a crop sensor camera and the 18-140 is a crop sensor lens. IMO the D500 would be your best bet . The 5600, 7200, and 7500 would also work very well.

A full frame camera would be the best. Nikon has an incredible deal on the full frame D610 right now. I think they're trying to clear them out. The deal comes with the 50mm f/1.8 which would be better than the 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 for low light. It would focus more reliably in the low light conditions. He could still use the 18-140mm DX lens but its smaller image circle would not fill the entire full frame sensor.

The D750 is fantastic in low light situations, but it is a full frame camera.

A full frame is better in low light if the OP is willing to use a full frame lens. If the OP insist on using the 18-140mm then something like the D500 is better. The D7500 is OK too.

Without an indication of the budget, there is no answer to his question.

The best low light bodies cost 10 times the value of that lens. Better to buy a body and a lens if low light is the primary consideration.

When you want to shoot in low light the lens used is as important as the camera body. the 18-140 is not meant to use in low light with out flash. I have used a Pentax K3 MKII with a Sigma 17-50 f 2.8 to shoot inside a church with out flash.

With that lens there is no camera at all that will yield satisfactory low light performance.

Sometimes the truth hurts.

The best Nikon DSLR's for low noise are the DF and D3s followed by the D4s. The 18-140 would handicap these cameras unless you apply post process with some skill.

If you are allowed try flash although that might be a little awkward.

As someone who has taken photos in a church sanctuary, I believe noise is most important. With that in mind, I would recommend the Z6 to someone who is just starting. If it is worth doing, it should be done right, to honor both God and man, and the Z6 is the best Nikon of any type.
