Found a teeny tiny zebra jumping spider on my porch steps, so I decided to treat myself to a photo shoot. Isn't she adorable? Comments for improvement appreciated. Canon 7D Mark II, Yongnuo YN24EX Macro Flash, Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, hand held

Hi Linda,

I've never seen a Hummingbird in a nest, so this is pretty neat. A few observations:

Focus is a bit soft, mostly I would assume because you shot through a window. If there is a significant difference in temperature from indoors to outdoors, this can happen when shooting through glass.

On the right side of the frame, have you considered cropping that leaf out? You'd still have plenty of room and will eliminate a distraction from the main subject. You would also bring the main subject into a greater amount of detail by cropping as well.

Shooting with a bit of fill-flash would also bring this shot to the next level. Not always possible, I know, but will not only add sharpness, but control the contrast within the scene as well.

Other than these, a really unique image of an amazing moment. Nice capture.

Hi Mark!

Yes, I was shooting through a window. Focus is very soft. I'm not sure what I did wrong. It was the first time using my 100-400mm lens too. I was disappointed with my session. But, that's how you learn.

You're absolutely right -- I think cropping the leaf would improve the composition.

Yea, fill flash does wonders in the shade -- don't think I could have accomplished that through the window or at that distance. But I won't know if I don't try.

Thank you for taking the time to comment to help me improve my skills along my photographic journey!

Very nice! These are beautifully done.
If you want to try it, wolf spiders give off a pretty good 'eye shine' in the dark. It would be interesting to see a picture of that. I expect it would involve a staged shot, precise use of a flashlight, and prolonged exposure.

Thanks Mark! I was so excited to find a wolfie carrying her egg sac, so I housed her and fed her till one day she was carrying the babes on her back! Sounds like I need 8 arms to accomplish the eye shine!

These are excellent. I don't really know the difference between A. marmorus versus A. trifolium, as their color variations include individuals that look like this. One way to maybe tell is to look at the underside.
