Linda, Posting here I assume you are looking for feedback. Wonderful opportunity if you know where this nest is. But looking at your photo, I’m struggling to find any part of it in sharp focus. Was your lens clean?

Best,

Mike

Composition, background, texture color, and subject proudly looking to the future [photo reads from left to right] all excellent. A story well told Linda, which is what the storytelling art of photography is about.

Hi Mike -- Yes, I am looking for feedback. I was shooting through a window. Any advice for shooting techniques to get better focus through a window?

I tried to post a pic here, but not an option here, so sent you a PM with a pic. Does the window open? If so open it while mom is away. If not, clean the window inside and out, use newspapers to wipe with. Might try a tripod with live view if an option.

Good luck, wish I was there.

Mike

Sorry Linda, just read your info again. I think you need to up that shutter speed significantly. Could be just enough blur to cause what I’m looking at.

Best,

Mike

Hi Mike! I'm going to see if I can get the window to be open (it's not my house). Yep, tripod and live view next time! I was thinking of investing in a shutter release -- any recommendations?

Yeah, I realized the shutter was too slow -- forgot to check before I started to shoot. :-(

Mike as covered the more technical side of it, and dpullum the artistic side.

I just wanted to add that it's a very cute scene :)

Nice shot, good just finding the bird and nest. How far away from the nest was the image taken at. If blown up too much that could be why it is a touch "soft".

Hi Linda,

I've never seen a Hummingbird in a nest, so this is pretty neat. A few observations:

Focus is a bit soft, mostly I would assume because you shot through a window. If there is a significant difference in temperature from indoors to outdoors, this can happen when shooting through glass.

On the right side of the frame, have you considered cropping that leaf out? You'd still have plenty of room and will eliminate a distraction from the main subject. You would also bring the main subject into a greater amount of detail by cropping as well.

Shooting with a bit of fill-flash would also bring this shot to the next level. Not always possible, I know, but will not only add sharpness, but control the contrast within the scene as well.

Other than these, a really unique image of an amazing moment. Nice capture.

Hi Mark!

Yes, I was shooting through a window. Focus is very soft. I'm not sure what I did wrong. It was the first time using my 100-400mm lens too. I was disappointed with my session. But, that's how you learn.

You're absolutely right -- I think cropping the leaf would improve the composition.

Yea, fill flash does wonders in the shade -- don't think I could have accomplished that through the window or at that distance. But I won't know if I don't try.

Thank you for taking the time to comment to help me improve my skills along my photographic journey!

Yup! It really isn't that bad though, so don't be so hard on yourself. You didn't do anything wrong, actually. It's the physics of shooting through that extra layer of glass that isn't in your lens. If you had shot with no glass in the way, I am betting it would be tack sharp.

Right, window would have enormous glare.
