Here's a follow-up question: Why don't camera makers include a decent strap with their cameras that cost thousands of dollars? I think we can all agree the provided straps are horrible.

No kidding. I was kind of annoyed to find the strap on my D850 wasn't even padded. Sure, the grippy strip is kinda nice, but with something as simple as a basic 50mm F1.8G lens on the body it starts to cut in to my neck after a little bit. I'd love a 50-100 dollar upgrade option (factoring in the near-mandatory name-brand price increase), but it would be far, far better as an included feature on the flagship series cameras.

Paul hit it right, you can always tweak it later unless you are in a situation where you need files to be sent off quickly, then a trial shot or two to dial in your WB is a good idea. Otherwise I too just leave my 850 set to Auto WB and it's usually really close.

My only noticeable issues are when my bride wants me to take pics of our kid in a room with horrible yellow (ahem, "warm") lighting. And she refuses to change them, so I guess it's a WB correction for me in those situations.

Follow the rule of 500 (500/ focus length = max time of exposure before trails start to appear) for a start. Personally, I don't like to go more than 80% of the way there myself.

Funny to find this thread this morning. I booted my old point-n-shoot (a Fuji Z33WP) and sure enough it worked. I wanted to see if I could tweak any of the important settings or get a raw file off of it. The first thing I found was that it still had a few files stored on the internal memory from January of 2010. A brief little trip down memory lane, but they were soon deleted, and I also found no such ability to tweak any settings. I lost interest in it almost immediately.

And dang it's little... like a 5/8" thick credit card.

There's no way I'd use it for much other than a dunk in a creek while I'm fishing. It takes pictures, I guess. This photographer outgrew the tool that got him started.

The image OOC is better, IMHO, than the PP. I have 2 questions. Why are you using a JPEG and not a RAW (NEF) image for PP, especially since you’re are using a D850 camera?

Secondly, have you considered a monochrome image?

I only shoot RAW these days, at this time I was shooting a combo because my laptop was crap and could hardly open a big JPG let alone do any significant PP work. I don't edit JPGs, others did.

As for monochrome, I had not, but this is what it looks like...

For the price of the 50 1.8, it's worth it just to have it. It's a very nice little lens.

I have 1 really nice DSLR body, which I got for noise handling over my T5i, and 2 lenses - a good macro and a basic 50mm f1.8 which is just above the bottom for Nikon's lineup.

I won an award last night for a photo I took a while ago (https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-586873-1.html) after hardly knowing what I was doing with the camera. Turned out it was kind of dumb luck that I did as well as I did, but the post-processing was very helpful in this case (again, kinda dumb luck).

An Average Joe driving a Ferrari is probably going to beat a NASCAR driver driving a Prius around a racetrack. That said, the Average Joe probably doesn't fully understand what his rig is capable of, therefore putting Average Joe and Pro Driver in the same model of car on the same track is going to show you who really knows what they're doing, and they're going to make it look easy relative to the guy struggling.

How do you know you're not a successful photographer until you've used a mirrorless camera?

If success in photography is capturing a high-quality, sellable or emotion-provoking image, show me a photograph a mirrorless camera can take that my D850 can't.

Not what capabilities that MILC has that my DSLR doesn't, but specifically, what photo it can take that I can't.

IF success in photography is NOT capturing a high-quality, sellable or emotion-provoking image, then what is?

Pffft, that's what the Hue sliders in Lightroom are for.

Frankly I do hope DSLRs are dead, it'll make affording a plethora of lenses and an extra D850 body so much easier.

I saw this vid in question a few days ago. It rubbed me kind of the wrong way at first but I appreciated the insistence toward pro photographers. I bought my D850 15 months ago, not long before the Z6 and Z7 came out and Sony started having a better lens selection. I looked at a few mirrorless systems and frankly I didn't like them - I like/ liked how my D850 feels solid and firm in hand. The arrogance that "ya gotta have this" is really off-putting it feels like high school again and having to wear the right brand of jeans or you're not cool.

I was going to say a jogging stroller but the burro/ sherpa jokesters beat me to it :)

Great thread, btw. I'm looking heavily at a few big, used primes for shooting wildlife as well.
