There are a number of automated backup programs out there. I am using CrashPlan. That software will check at regular intervals and copy any changed files to the cloud. It will also do the same thing and save the files in a local disk. You get the best of both worlds that way. If you have to restore something, you have a local disk to restore from, avoiding bandwidth issues. If the local drive fails you have the files in the cloud. The cloud is a backup backup.

The automated backup feature means you don't have to think about backing up locally every so often.

I use GoodSync to back up my external drive to my NAS then to the cloud in Box. Image files, Lightroom catalog, presets, and backups are all copied. With GoodSync, any changes made are updated accordingly to both locations. The folder structure is retained to the level that if I needed to point Lightroom temporarily to my NAS, I could continue to work. Upon restoration of the external drive, any changes made will synchronized to the external drive. I have not tried pointing to Box but my approach would be that if I need to point to Box, I have a very serious problem that should be of a higher priority. Thus, Box is used to restore if both the external and the NAS are lost.

I am running out of space on the C Drive for Lightroom. What is the best practice for moving the Lightroom system onto a cloud drive?

As others have said, I would not recommend moving everything to the cloud. Performance will be greatly impacted and not really the way Lightroom Classic was intended to be used. The assumption here is that you are speaking of Lightroom Classic and not Lightroom, the mobile version.

Regarding the drive space, the first thing to assess is the reason why you are running out of space. If it is due to your images being stored on the C drive, you can easily move them to an external drive and this would free up space. In moving the images, I recommend using Lightroom to move the images. In this way, Lightroom will know where they are located. You could simply move the images as an alternative and then sync Lightroom by telling it where to find the images. My preference is for the former.

Lightroom creates a backup of it catalog and where you place this backup and manage it is also important. Are you backing up your catalog to the same drive? This will also take up considerable space over time. If you are placing your backups on the C drive, I recommend moving this to an external drive, too. Additionally, review the backups. You don't need to keep every single backup that Lightroom creates. I typically trim mine to at least a weeks worth of backups. You will need to look at where Lightroom currently places the backups. The default is to place it on the C drive, in the Lightroom sub-folder of the Pictures folder along with the catalog.

Overall, you may be able to free up space on your C drive by moving the images and Lightroom backups to an external drive. However, keep your catalog on the C drive.

Feel free to contact me via private message and I will be glad to help in anyway that I can.

I'm annoyed.

My monitor visibly changes color on me from time to time (it's trippy watching the WB fade from obviously blue to obviously yellow and then waver in between a bit) and my printer is printing my not-very-pink kid in shades of deep pink. Note, he's not pink as a rose in real life. I haven't printed a good photo in nearly 2 months as a result of this.

So, beyond obviously needing a stable monitor, what's the good calibration software these days? I'm a hobbyist, I'm not going to dump a grand in to it, but I can easily come up with a good sum in a jiffy.

There have been several good suggestions regarding the cabling and I will that I have encountered similar issues if the HDMI cable is seated completely. If you have any devices between your computer and your monitor such as a KVM switch, audio extractor, etc., temporarily remove them from the path and go straight between your computer and monitor. Another item I would check is the night light setting on your computer. In most cases, schedules can be set based on location causing a change at sunset/sunrise for a given location. Additionally, a color temperature can be set. The night light feature will cause the colors to be off a bit to a lot depending upon your settings and whether it is functioning properly.

Before considering a new monitor, assuming you have proven the cable is not the issue, test your computer against a known good monitor or television. If the problem persists, then it is likely you have an issue with either your video card or drivers. If the problem disappears, then I would check the monitor against another device such as another computer, a streaming device (Roku, AppleTV, etc.) just to validate that it is truly the monitor.

As for calibration, I use the xRite i1 Display Pro, but there have been suggestions previously for others that are a bit less expensive and all have had good results for others in the field.

Good luck and feel free to send my a private message if you wish some help in troubleshooting.

Sincerely,

Charles

I finally succumbed to purchasing a subscription to Adobe's cloud-based Lightroom program. Lightroom 5 is still resident on my computer and at present is still working just fine even though I upgraded to the Catalina operation system. When I start the cloud-based program I get a message saying that the .ircat files must be upgraded and will no longer be accessible to older versions. Should I copy these old versions to a new location and proceed with the upgrade? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mathman,

Yes, I would make a copy of the old versions in a separate location. Lightroom Classic went through an upgrade a few months ago and I went through a similar process. If all goes well, you will have two copies of your lrcat file (note that it is lrcat for Lightroom catalog and not ircat). One will be your old version and the other will be the new version with a "-2" appended to the file name. I experienced no problems with the upgrade and have never needed to fall back to the old lrcat file.

Okay, so I know its not "Regis" Quality, but I'm so excited I was able to capture an Eagle. Actually other than in a Zoo, I've never seen one in the wild. Conditions were less than optimal as it was windy as heck, and shot from nearly 1000' away, (therefore heavily cropped) but I'm still thrilled.

Nice shot regardless, Gary. It's always exciting to catch an eagle but I think you have quite a unique shot with the wind ruffling up his headdress...

I have read about rechargeable batteries and plan to buy some. What I don't know is what kind of charger should I be looking for? I searched this forum but only saw old entries and no specific mention of a non-OEM charger except Lacrosse.

Please let me know if you have had a good experience and the make and or model.

Thanx

What batteries do you wish to charge? Since you mentioned the Lacrosse, I am anticipating that you are in search of a charger for AA cells and on this assumption, I offer a consideration for the Powerex MH-C9000. I like this charger as it is both a charger and an analyzer.

I love the way the Warthog flies......gracefulness with a kick ass punch. I watched a video of one slipping through a valley approaching a target on the opposite side of a mountain. As it came upon the target, the plane "slid" up one side of the mountain and down the other as though the sides of the mountain were one smooth surface, rolled into position, and fired obliterating the threat. It was impressive and I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in watching a well-executed, stealth, attack.

I'm curious, what are people using for camera straps. I've tried several and the one I like best is Capturing Couture. It's basic, but it meets my needs.

I use the Black Rapid straps. I have a Double Breathe which I often separate into a single and a Backpack Breathe when I am out hiking and using my backpack.

How many of you fellow UHHers use your camera strap when the camera is on a tripod or monopod? Personally, I remove my strap (it has quick-connects) when on either the tripod or monopod. Maybe I've been foolish and lucky, but have had no problems.

Recently, I saw a photo of a pro photographer who had the camera strap wrapped around his wrist while the camera was on a monopod. Actually, I recall the camera strap as well as another strap on the monopod itself. Now, I can appreciate the concerns for expensive camera and lens being used near groups of folks who might interfere and create a problem. Better safe than sorry, especially as a professional.

But, should I be doing the same? Is it better/safer to leave the strap in place when on the mono or tripod? What are your thoughts and/or experiences in this regard?

A strap with the monopod, if properly used, could add additional stability.

Oh, I knew that. I just wonder where “prolly” came from. Likely lazy English speakers and people who didn’t do well in their high school English grammar classes. Or does it reflect the quality of the American education system.

I thought you probably (prolly) knew that...

I almost continued my reply with "...due to laziness..." but I think it is really a mixture of things to which laziness and the education system are parts to the whole---lowered expectations, feel-good mentality (building of a false sense of self-esteem; feelings versus logic, responsibility, and accountability), culture, political correctness, role models (celebrities versus scientists, mathematicians, good writers, artists, etc.), ad infinitum.
