How many of you fellow UHHers use your camera strap when the camera is on a tripod or monopod? Personally, I remove my strap (it has quick-connects) when on either the tripod or monopod. Maybe I've been foolish and lucky, but have had no problems.

Recently, I saw a photo of a pro photographer who had the camera strap wrapped around his wrist while the camera was on a monopod. Actually, I recall the camera strap as well as another strap on the monopod itself. Now, I can appreciate the concerns for expensive camera and lens being used near groups of folks who might interfere and create a problem. Better safe than sorry, especially as a professional.

But, should I be doing the same? Is it better/safer to leave the strap in place when on the mono or tripod? What are your thoughts and/or experiences in this regard?

Like you, I prefer the camera be unencumbered in any way when mounted on a tripod/monopod. Agree about the quick releases too. Happy Shooting!

I leave the strap on, is it safer?

I also remove the strap when the camera is on a tripod, but not on a monopod. The tripod will stand by itself, but the monopod won't, so I can see the reasoning behind having the security of the strap. I don't recall ever removing the strap when using a monopod.

I'm curious, what are people using for camera straps. I've tried several and the one I like best is Capturing Couture. It's basic, but it meets my needs.

FWIW: all of my tripods and monopod have an arca Swiss clamp on them, my camera has a black rapid arca Swiss plate always on the bottom, my black rapid sling strap connects to the BR plate via a carabiner, always remove the strap when using on a tripod/monopod, never carry camera attached to tripod.

I had the same issue and tried a variety of approaches before settling down to what I do now. On a tripod, when wind was a problem, even the quick-connect fittings on the camera seemed to be a problem, making a racket and probably introducing some vibration.

Eventually, I decided on a light wrist strap that I always leave on the camera and nearly always have on my right wrist when carrying the camera. When walking around I attach a strap to the tripod mount that places most of the camera weight on my shoulder (I found the straps that put the weight on my neck to be painful on even a moderate walk.

I almost always have the camera strap attached to me, tripod or not. I wear it crossbody when hand held and around my neck when on a tripod.

This! "...Eventually, I decided on a light wrist strap that I always leave on the camera and nearly always have on my right wrist when carrying the camera..." This has worked extremely well for me over the years...

btw, as a commercial makeup artist I've been on quite a few high value commercial shoots... Nearly without exception the key shooter on the gig is NOT using a camera strap,,, even on location assignments. After many decades of shooting in every imaginable scenario I've never dropped a camera, albeit those pesky lens caps yes indeed... lol

FYI: want to instantly brand yourself as an nob amateur? then by all means use your camera's vendor's provided neck strap... they appreciate your marketing for them... lol Please folks if you must use a neck strap invest in a comfy after market model... like the OP/TECH USA Super Classic Strap

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/170172-REG/OP_TECH_USA_1001092_Super_Classic_Strap_3_8_Black.html

I put this on my second shooter's camera and she loves it...
Has quick release clips so you can remove the padded portion while you camera is on a tripod...
However for a monopod I will only use a wrist strap...

Hope this helps!

This is my setup... it is an Optech Pro Strap. Nicely shaped neoprene neck and the quick connects. It is comfortable and the camera is at my hip when not in use. But, when using it, the quick connects are always in the way and need to be repositioned. Not a big deal, but an inconvenience.

I don't use a strap on the tripod as it just feels like one more thing that could get caught on me (or someone else) by accident as well as making the camera more vulnerable to wind related movement. I don't have a monopod but a friend who does routinely keeps the strap on and pushes out against it towards the monopod, which he claims increases stability (don't use a stretch strap for this, LOL).

I have a Tamron strap that has a suede pad in the center that I've had since I bought my Minolta Maxxum 700i in 1988. The only time it comes off is when my camera is on a tripod. Both my tripod & monopod are equipped with an Oben head that with a QR shoe. All lenses with a tripod mount have QR shoes on them. I don't expect the camera lugs to support the camera when I have the Tamron 150-600 mounted. They're not designed to support that kind of weight. So I carry it by the tripod mount.

I never take my camera strap off; it’s there to protect the camera and never been a problem on the tripod.
