Reminds me of the story of the physician at a party, met a lawyer and asked him if he should send a bill to people who asked him for medical advice at parties. The lawyer said, "certainly, it's professional advice, by all means send a bill."

A few days later the doc got a bill from the lawyer for legal advice.

Excellent pictures. You have captured the experience very well.

Hint: when going high up a mountain like you did it is a good idea for you or someone in your party to carry a water purifying filter kit. Top off all of your water bottles at the last water source on the way up and purify more water on the way down if necessary.

I would modify that to say that everyone in the group should have water purifying kits. As a search and rescue volunteer, I've seen several cases of someone getting separated from their group. If those who get separated lack essential equipment, they have a problem.

To my mind, this sort of thing is reserved for the “younger generation “.

Younger generation? That must mean me since I can run so fast that my hair can't keep up.

I understand the desire to lighten the load by carrying less water, but that is dangerous. Dehydration causes problems that interfere with your ability to both think and move. And if there are streams available, you can get filters or chemical purifiers that will make the water safe to drink.

Reminds me of something I read long ago, maybe one of the Readers' Digest funnies. Local church people put together plans for a new chapel and sent it off to whoever had to approve it for that denomination. Came back with the comment, "are they angels?" What did that mean? Finally one of the locals realized that the plans had no restrooms.

Don't forget a good hat and neck protection. Your body has a priority system with the brain at the top of the list. It will send warm blood to the head and let hands and feet get cold. Your head may not feel cold, but if it and your neck are not insulated, you will lose a lot of heat there without realizing it. Then there may be no heat left over for hands and feet. Likewise, insulate your arms and legs.

I hate the cold weather, primarily because my muscles react badly to it. That being said, I have sub zero boots, warm hat, a long, heavy jacket and earmuffs, but I have never found anything that works to keep my hands warm while I'm out trying to take pictures. I have glomitts that have pockets for chemical hand warmers. They do keep my hands warm, but I find them clumsy to wear while shooting. I have gloves with "caps" over the thumb and forefinger that you can remove and replace to have a more tactile experience when shooting. However, they are not warm below 32'. Do any of you have hand coverings that are both warm and allow reasonable use of your hands on cold days? What do you use or recommend?

I will be going into a cave to photograph rock art. Flashes are not permitted, but flashlights are. Do you know of a flashlight that puts out roughly 360 degrees of white light? I have the usual LED flashlights that put out a beam.

I'd get a headlamp rather than a hand-held flashlight. That way you put the light wherever your head turns. You could even conceivably attach it to a tripod, monopod etc. There are many good ones available, some offering both spot and flood modes and even different colors of light. For search and rescue I use a Black Diamond Storm but there are many other good models. REI has lots of them.

Remote shutter on a tripod is good. Another option if timing is not critical is the time delay on your camera. Most DSLRs offer not only 10 second delays to get yourself in the picture, but also about a 2 second delay to allow you to avoid shaking the camera while taking the picture.

If people are there they will likely move which makes it very difficult. Ideally, get a flash and learn to use it quickly. Otherwise, high ISO and wide open f stop to go to a short exposure time.

"VctoriiiaSecreeet" Really?!

I don't understand how these spammers can keep writing such nonsense and expect people to fall for it. I wonder if anyone has done a study of how successful these spammers are. I see a good business model in refining spam emails.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who fall for those scams. Were it not so they would not stay in business. We can all help by spreading the word, especially to those like a few older people who are not computer savvy.

Not only might it be illegal to transport squirrels somewhere else, but if you move them from an urban/suburban area to a rural or wilderness type place, they will probably not last long. They will not be used to avoiding the predators in their new home.

Reminds me of when our neighbor adopted some baby squirrels after mama got run over. Don't do it! Those critters came to associate people with food and would climb right up your leg to try to get a hand-out. I suspect they had short lives since they were lacking the normal fear of things human that protects most squirrels in the wild.

I spent a couple of summers logging while I was in college. Someone there set up a very dangerous situation, what loggers call a widow maker.

Yep. As a skydiver, she was probably not greatly bothered by heights, and they took plenty of precautions. Looks spectacular, but she was not really in danger.
